Except at NagPanchmi and at a desultory zoo I have never seen a snake in India and I was often in rural areas. My wife had a cobra enter the compound when she was young. THe odds must be insignificant compared to being bitten by dogs and monkeys..

I agree edwardseco, to date I've encountered three snakes! Two lime green ones in Goa and a big one in the Mountains of southern Goa, perhaps a king cobra, it was certainly big enough and prevelant in the area. Although the sighting was was from a motorbike so who knows?
Anyway lots of time in India few snakes!!! ![]() |

There are snakes in the hills above Pushkar, so if you hike up to the temples there, be very careful. met an Australian fellow in 1989 who had been bitten; he spent several months walking with crutches.
He wrote a book about his experience; I think I have a copy of it, but can't locate it right now. |

lived on a farm in a rural area of andhra pradesh for a couple of months and saw plenty of snakes, almost on a daily basis, especially after it had rained.
Check out the pic of the cobra finishing a bullfrog in my gallery I also saw one viper in the nearby hills, lots of ratsnakes and checkered keelbacks ("watersnakes") and one day had a visit of a beautiful green vinesnake ("treesnake") in the classroom i was teaching in, i'll try to post a pic of that fella too. The only one i actually dared to catch... If you're into snakes there's a nice fieldguide on indian snakes by romulus withaker called 'snakes of india'. greetz tms |

The snakebite numbers in India swell because of the demand for snakes. You can make a small mint in India harvesting and/or capturing snakes to sell for use in rituals in India and for black-market export to East Asia. In South India, snakes really are everywhere--you are just not likely to see them. People, especially poor children in rural areas, capture them and sell them.

snake attack
A couple of years ago I was walking around the less visited hallways of the Amber Fort in Jaipur. Came around a corner and a viper lunged at me from a stairwell. I've never seen such an aggresive snake in my life.
Luckily I jumped back out of the way to make clear for the the little guy. I was a lot more cautious when walking around less trafficked areas after that. |

Living in rural Haryana on my visits I have seen plenty of snake skin left after they shed skin but only seen 2 snakes alive.
One I saw more than 14 years ago. The neighbours were making a huge commotion as if a tiger had got into their house. I casually went round and saw there was a small snake which had caused the whole scene. Poor bugger soon had its head chopped off and was then buried. |

Apparently in a quarter of bites from poisonous snakes, the snake doesn't inject any venom. The first bite is often a warning and the snake is in control of how much venom it injects. As they only produce a certain amount they are very judicious as to when they actually use it.
Hope that makes everyone feel better. ![]() Oh, and in three months I haven't seen as snake that wasn't in a little basket.

I saw a good sized lizard once... does that count? BTW I have nothing against snakes. I have held two huge pythons over my shoulders and I think snakes are beautiful, and their skin/scales feel so silky and amazing. Quite different from my friend who covers his eyes when one appears on TV. I guess that's the thing about irrational fears, tho. They're irrational. |
