Dog Abuse in Cochin Area .....Help

I am staying near Cochin ..Aluva direction and for the past few weeks have seen how 4 beautiful dogs are being kept in small cages 24/7 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes they get fed
Yes they get hosed down
Yes they get some water when hosed (no bowl)

They do not have a human touch them
They do not have a walk
They do not have free access to water

They are sad and neglected

THis is happening in a Christian Ashram

Little/no response when I ask for changes .......

HELP ....what can be done ?????????

Agencies to help ??????

Obviously there are many needs in India ... but animals abused in this way by authorities who are educated and spiritual have rights too , they have no voice .

Please - if you can help . I find it so distressing to witness.

Karuna SPCA
Vety. Hospital Campus, Ramavarma Club Road, Ernakulam,
KOCHI - 682 011, Kerala, India.

Have you tried to speak to a higher up at the ashram?

Are u planning to take any action>>??
Spca have made life misreable for many as stray dogs are present everywhere in kerala & people are being bitten by them!! they wont even allow the civic authorities to snatch those dogs & kill them ..Many of these stray dogs have rabies ...so u can understand the vulnerability of the situation..
I think u need to go & talk to the missionary authorities first, regarding the problem that u find there..

It's very difficult in India to help an animal that is mistreated by its owner cause as far as I know (please soemone correct me if I'm wrong!) animals don't have rights here, only the owner does.

Very difficult situation. You might have a lot of trouble, have to make a big effort and might not see any results.

I would try to find out if there are animal shelters close by and talk to the people there. You definitely need support in this and someone who knows how to talk to those people.

I would get the Yellow Pages and call all the vets close by. With luck there is one who is involved enough in animal welfare that is willing to help.

Here is list of animal welfare organisations. You could call them and ask for advice.

I tried to feed them in both instances, but....

I still think about them.

Actually ... I think since they don't have access to water you could have a chance if you go straight to the police. I think even here animals have that much rights. What do you have to lose? You could at least try. Or ask a lawyer, they should know the laws here. If you are ready to pay something (to the lawyer) they might be willing to put up a fight for you.

But be careful you don't get taken for a ride. Do you have a trustworthy Indian companion? (I assume you are not Indian?)

If u want to help do then this!!!

Take some other travellers like u and go to those guys, tell them u want to buy dogs!!! That is a concrete help, isnt it?
and then make a price with them
at the end these r just 4 dogs and not 10, 20 or so isnt it??

Not a bad idea! It could work. Yes, you could try that!

But then they will just get the next dogs and do the same ...

Great idea Lotus-Flower, in the short term. I'm afraid I don't have any other suggestions.

At least the OP has been given a few options. All I'm hoping for is for these dogs to be out of there, NOW.

How much of this sort of thing is going on out there and we have absolutely no idea. It doesn't even bear thinking about.

Why........oh why and a Christian ashram at that????

Why? Because some people feel inferior and powerless so they look for ways to feel powerful ...

And the majority of onlookers (here: members of that Christian community) won't say anything.

Where I lived with my husband in the 90s we had a neighbour who constantly brought animals, kittens and pups, home which he had found. He claimed to love them but treated them really bad. First of all he tied them 24/7. One pup was crying all the time, so whenever that nutcase left to run some errands we untied him and let him roam and play with our dog. We had to be so watchful because if he'd found out he would be mad and might lock the dog inside the house as well and we wouldn't be unable to help him. That neighbour was a bully, constantly shouting at people. He also hit the dog a lot.

After many months of arguing and talking to him I could finally convince him that he should leave the dog be. Freed, the dog hang only out at our house, avoided the neighbour like the plague! He's still with me, that dog, now 10 years old, happy fellow!

One cat died because he had "forgotten" it. Tied it up and forgot about it. I got sick and died. I only heard about it afterwards. One other kitten also got sick and started pooping everywhere in his house. So he threw it out. That poor thing was malnourished, had a high fever, and the poo was running like water from his behind. The moment he chucked it out we took it to the vet and nourished it back to health. He's still with me, now also 10 years old, and I love him to death!

He was a sick, pathetic person, no success in his private life (no woman wanted to marry him, although he certainly wasn't poor!), so he wanted animals to "train" as he called it.

I spent years talking to him, fighting with him. In the end he agreed with me. Nowadays he doesn't have any animals, thank God!

What I mean to say: don't ever give up when you see animal abuse! Talk to people, argue and put up a fight. Sometimes you will make a difference!

I'm really surprised an Ashram would do this?. Is it a normal thing?. The ashram I'm at puts the dogs out at night, but they just come back in. Everybody feeds them, even if it's chapattis and dahl and such. they're skinny, but not malnourished.

Imagine the Karma of these people.
They're coming back as themselves for a thousand lives.

I don't know how I'll sleep this weekend worrying about these 4 animals!!! I really, really hope something is done VERY quickly. Maybe by Monday there'll be some good news waiting for me on IM (and extra good news for those dogs too.)

Noodle, I've had neighbours who've abused their animals as well. He was a real cockroach. He used to kick his two black labbies until they screamed - not yelped, but screamed. When I used to shout at him for hurting his animals, all I got was "shut up you bitch." However, I did used to thank him - after all 'bitches' are usually nice people Oh, and his wife, although she didn't beat the dogs, was almost as bad as he - she threatened to poison MY dogs.... TG they've now re-located to the UK and I don't have the angst or anguish of waiting for his car to come down the road, the gate to open, the dogs trying to greet him, and then waiting for the screams. I had the local SPCA come around to his house and he told them to mind their own business!!!

Ignorance, in my opinion is no excuse!!!!

I think your ashram must be an exception!!!! I was almost booted out of one for defending a dog that was about to be beaten with a broom-handle.

As for their Karma - they'll maybe feel the same pain as they've inflicted, or possibly grow spiritually in the knowledge of the pain caused in previous lives. People who do this sort of thing, surely can't be enlightened beings.

That's what I believe too. I belive when or after you die you will become aware of what you have done from the perspective of the other. And then it's again up to you to realize that this is not right and grow or fall back and repeat the same mistakes ...

People who do this sort of thing surely ARE not enlightened beings - but they have the potential to become one just like anybody else. Rememer, existence is forgiving ...
