Dead Cows
I don't mean to offend here, but when I first went to India I was very curious about how dead cows were taken care of, but I never got around to asking. Do they get cremated, buried or are they then used for leather/meat products?

Reasonable question.
I don't know, but I'm sure that whatever is available is not wasted. And I never saw a cow carcass in the street...

I saw a dead cow lying in one of Varanasi's main thoroughfares for three days before someone moved it. Unfortunately, I wasn't around to see who moved it. I also stumbled across a dead cow on the seventh hole of Agra golf course under most unforunate circumstances. My ball actually came to a rest on the rib cage which had become exposed by vultures. Fortunately, for me I got a drop and didn't lose a shot. What happened to the cow I don't know but I suspect it stayed there until nature had taken care of it.

cows shouldn't be made to suffer
Being an animal lover, I find it hard to read stories such as the above. Having spent the first five years of my life in a rural village, I still remember the amazement I felt at seeing a calf being born, it was quite an event. I think people in rural India treat their cows well. But I feel sorry for all the cows wondering around in the bigger cities, eating garbage and nearly being run over by cars and trucks.
There really needs to be designated areas set out in the cities for these animals, where someone can make sure they are fed and watered at least. After all something considered so scared should be treated with a little more respect. ![]()
