Yes, I often wonder about this too. I know in Europe regulations are quite strict, means you can't just claim anything on your product, you need approval of certain supervising bodies. Now, I don't think this exists in India and it's probably much easier to get away with claims ...

Of course we can't and I am sure there is lot of misleading, like sometimes the company does not test but farms it out to third parties, other times the product is not tested but the ingredients are, etc.

But we have to start somewhere and therefore have to assume that the specific label notification , especially if confirmed by email, is reliable at least to some degree.

Sometimes, progress is made by very, very tiny steps. Doing nothing won't change anything. At least this way companies learn what consumer find important.

This is a (pet-)animal forum and I am sure that children and Dalits are not allowed to come under that heading.... .

Three big companies which all operate in India have recently announced they will improve policies around animal treatment:

PepsiCo
Under the leadership of Indian CEO Indra Nooyi, food-industry giant PepsiCo., the multibillion-dollar parent company of brands like Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lays, Tropicana, Quaker Oats, Kurkure, Mirinda, 7UP, Mountain Dew, Aquafina and Slice has announced that it will no longer use animals to develop and test their products and will stop immediately funding of research which use animals in tests. PepsiCo will also encourage partners and suppliers to use alternatives to animal tests.

Coca-Cola
Just weeks after its leading competitor, PepsiCo, announced that it would stop testing on animals, soft-drink giant Coca-Cola, owner of brands like Minute Maid, Canada Dry, Kinley, Maaza, ThumsUp, Limca, Sprite and Georgia Coffee, also announced that it will no longer conduct or fund animal experiments. They will also inform their partners and research organizations that from now on Coca Col insists they use alternatives to animal testing.

Burger King
Burger King will now start purchasing more of its animal products from farms that do not confine hens to cruel battery cages or keep sows in gestation crates. The company is also rewarding its suppliers for adopting a much less cruel method of chicken slaughter. These changes will mean less painful lives and deaths for billions of animals.

In response to Burger King's and other companies' new purchasing demands, Smithfield Foods—the largest pork supplier in the world—announced that it will phase out the use of all gestation crates in its farms. Just a few days later, Canada's largest pork producer, Maple Leaf Foods, announced that it will follow suit. Almost simultaneously, Cargill Foods—another of the world's biggest pork producers—pledged to stop using gestation crates in half its farms immediately.

No idea where Burger King will get its meat from in India but it would be interesting to see whether they follow their policies through in developing markets as well. In December 2006 they announced they will be opening restaurants in the main Indian metros, has anybody seen these yet?

That's very encouraging news!

Do they apply their new policies globally, do you know? Or start in their home country for now?

They say it will be implemented worldwide, so lets hope that will indeed be the case.

Hopefully Unilever, P&G and L'Oreal will be inspired by these actions and also stop animal tests soon. Until that time I will avoid buying their products.

That should lead to better-tasting stuff, maybe.

now I know why xxx-Cola tastes so awful: developed by an animal!

Sorry... Couldn't resist that ... serious subject and good news.
