Smile Companies in India that DO NOT test on animals

As India is becoming more and more a consumer society in which MNCs (multi national companies) with FMCGs (fast moving consumer goods) operate, there is cause for more concern regarding the origin and methods used to produce the products they are selling here.
The animal food scandal in the US (see thread started by Noodle) is an example of the type of problems which Indian consumers may be facing probably soon as well.

In this light I would like to start an IM ‘sticky’ listing companies in India which take animal welfare into account and specifically, do not test their products on animals or sponsor animal laboratories by third parties.

As I stay in Goa and retailing is still limited to small outlets, we do not see everything that comes on the market. So please add to the lists whenever you can.

Of course to verify whether a company does or does not is not so easy but one may assume that a company which specifically states that their products are not test on animals indeed stand behind their claim. When there are products which I use a lot I actually write/email to the company to ask whether they test or not and most of the time I get a reply.

So to start:

Companies in India that do not teston animals:

- Revlon - Cosmetics and hair products
- Cholayil - Medimix hand soap, Cuticura talc powder, Cuticura deodorant,
- Himalaya# - Personal care, health care, pet care products
- Chandrika - Soaps
- Sidha - Shampoos

# Do test if required by law

I have also attached a list with companies that do test on animals. It is an attachment as I have no idea how to get a table in this message format .

Thanks you, birds!

I just want to add that Himalaya also has a nice range of pet products for different kinds of typical ailments (bladder/kidney infections for example). They are very good - saves you the antibiotica in some cases (especially chronic illnesses)!

I will watch out to expand the list!

Excellent idea Birds. This is something I've thought about, as I do my best not to use products here at home (in the United States) that are tested on animals or contain animal byproducts. This may not be so easy in India, but with the help of this thread, it may be possible yet!
My guess is that most of the products and companies listed herein are going to be specific to the Indian market, as most cruelty-free companies here in the United States are small enough (and audience specific enough) that they aren't likely to have a foreign market. My guess is that it works the same way in India. Soo...all you current Indian travelers, get on here and post what you've found! Thanks so much for this.

Thanks for that useful info. I use a lot of the Himalaya products and can highly recommend then. Does anyone know if the Biotique products are also cruelty free? I do like this range and I am sure it isn't tested on animals but it would be nice to know for sure. They do really good sun protection without chemicals.

They say on their website

Biotique does not conduct cruel tests on animals.

Note the word 'cruel'. So they do test on animals but they try to be not cruel - whatever that means.

Too bad Dabur is red-listed there - I like their shampoos and some of their other products.

Himalaya reponse

Thank you for logging on to the guest pages of the Himalaya India website and interest in our product, Dental Cream. Himalaya's Personal Care products including Dental Cream, are not subjected to animal testing.

As per the WHO guidelines for oral therapeutic drugs for human use, the safety and efficacy studies should follow the Helsinki declaration norms. As per these norms, the safety has to be established through pre-clinical studies on laboratory animals following International protocol. The Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC), approves the protocols for such studies. Hence, on approval of IAEC, we conduct animal testing for all oral therapeutic products.

So, not all their products are not tested on animals. But at least personal care products are not.

Having information is great, is not it.

Why don't you write to them and ask clarification on that sentence on their website about 'no cruel test' which Noodle mentions?

Can we also be sure that the individual items (often purchased from different companies) that make up the end product are also not tested on animals?

Or that children are not exploited in any way by the company?

Or that Dalits are fairly represented in the workforce?

I guess what I'm trying to say is.....it's probably easy to get a certain label attached to your product, but does that label tell the whole story?
