Chicken Tent?
My preschool staff want to get hens to take care of scraps leftover from lunch and to provide fresh eggs. We have a huge yard at the preschool and the housekeeper says she'll take care of them so that is fine. But they say they will need a "tent" for the chickens and I just can't quite visualize that. Or rather I can.
Can any of you describe for me what they mean or, better yet, post a photo of a tent for chickens? I'm ignorant on this one. Here chickens live in wood shed called coops.

Is the 'tent' for Kerala or America? If for Kerala - look and see what the locals do. Here they make small twig and brush shelters for chickens and animals. Maybe they do something like that there?

Coming from a family of chicken farmers (with a small C)I will mention that with chickens the main problem is disease (and dogs)so don't get too tight with the shelter..

The one "tent" looks more like doghouse Hans. (1st link) and the thumbnail is adorable! But better than a lot of home in my Kerala neighborhood so...probably now.
I do think I'll just have to wait to be surprised but when I think "tent" I think of something made of fabric for camping in...and see chicken's pecking holes in such a structure. Maybe my contact is using "tent" creatively.... And another thing...why no "dancing chicken" emotion? Did the dog eat it? ![]() |

Something like a "chicken tractor" might do the trick. It's basically a portable coop. As others have said, this sort of thing is usually made of chicken wire. A chicken tractor has a very light frame and is made to be moved frequently. If you really want to contain and protect your chickens, cloth might not be enough. But here are some pictures:
http://home.centurytel.net/thecitychicken/tractors.html And I see that at least one of these uses a soft mesh instead of chicken wire, and another has a cloth top. (Some others have cloth or something else to provide cover from the sun.) You'll find all sorts of examples and plans with a search for "chicken tractor." |

What I see Indians using is basically just a big conical basket set on bricks with enough room for the chickens, particularly the young chicks to scoot under when a dog strolls by. If you drive around in the country in AP you see bigger ones out in the fields to shelter young goats from sun and predators.

As well as the brush shelters, they have these steel baskets like snowcrab has mentioned - there are wide gaps between the steel pieces for air - and these are used for young chicks.

There seem to be as many ways to coop a chicken as their are chickens.
I think wonderwomanusa has the right idea. I'll just send the 2000 rupees they are asking for 4 good laying hens and their "tent" and then have them send me a picture of what they set up. Wonder if I should tell them this will be an internationally noted chicken tent? I've already given them the go ahead so it shouldn't be too long. Besides, I have to give in on the chickens if I want to eventually get my way on the goat issue. Stay tuned for chicken and chicken tent (and goat)news as it occurs. |

Very anxiously awaiting arrival of chickens!
My downstairs neighbors used to get a couple of chicks every Easter, grew them up to about 12-15 weeks, and then butchered them in the back yard. It was kind of fun to have them around, except they'd come upstairs and dig in my plants! |

As far as "different" pets go, chickens especially the smaller brightly colored ones are a lot of fun and low maintenance. Much more feasible than pigs and more personality than rabbits.

Friends of my daughter's rabbit I take it! Seriously, when my sibs and I were growing up our rancher grandpa would bring over what he called "a box of quackers" each Easter (his annual baby duck joke) for us to raise. When the were grown we'd take them and release them on the beautiful lake on his ranch in Eastern Oklahoma...where they would promptly be drowned and eaten by giant snapping turtles! [Can one "off topic" oneself?] Back to reading about Indian chickens (in lieu of working.) |

It's amazing what can happen to an IM thread!
But let me add that rabbits are intelligent and affectionate pets
