Horrifying and absolutely despicable the apparent enjoyment of the spectators.

I didn't watch the video, but they do it in Tamil Nadu too.

The courts have branded it illegal, but hey, the people cry, it's our tradtion. Which makes it ok it seems.

Holy cows, anyone?

I don't care whether it's cows, bulls, giraffes or hippos. It's just not right to put any creature through that kind of anguish.

When I lived in Benaulim it was common for word of these fights to be spread word-of-mouth (no, I didn't attend and don't condone), and barely a few times I saw the police vans en route to intercept the fighting.

And no, buffalo steak is good (if you eat meat), one of the nicest is at Lucky Star in Colva..

Bullfighting is an ancient Mediterranean tradition, so will stem from Portuguese influence, certainly in Goa. I'm willing to wager a bet that's how it originated in Tamil Nadu too. (Moreover, the religions it originated from may well have extended eastwards at the time, that is to say far older than any Portuguese colonization, more likely transferred by the ancient Greeks if they were. Or similar rites may well have been simultaneous and indigenous there, centering around bull worship as they do.)

Not judging or condoning it, but I don't think it has anything to do with any Indian concepts of the cow being sacred or not.

If the same buffaloes met in the wild, wouldn't they fight anyways? Isn't this typical of males in the animal kingdom attempting to establish dominance? Street dogs fight in India on a daily basis. Is that cruel too?

Er, well, those bullfights aren't like that, Crv.

Anyway little did I know I'd ever get into a bullfighting-yes-or-no discussion here, of all places, and I don't intend to.

I just figured that as so often I'd offer some perspective as to what context to place it in.

It is illegal in Goa too but several ministers like it very much so there is little the police does .

Cock fighting goes on in Chattisgarh and Karnataka, and both states promote it in their tourism pamphlets, those are only 2 that I've noticed, are there more?

And we're not innocent in England either, only the name is different, Marriage.
