Bringing Dog to India and back to the US

Hi All,
My wife and I are planning an extended trip (1 to 2 years) in India. We have a 3 year old Golden Retriver whom we plan to take with us. We are currently in California.

I did read the posts on this site.
I wanted to get more info from folks who have done this recently.
Laws and regulations keep changing all the time.

a) What Airlines would you suggest?
b) Any Quarantine in India?
A friend mentioned that she read somewhere that a 30 day
quaratine is now required in India. Please advice/
c) Any recommended boarding facilities in Bombay or Gurgaon?
We would be based out of Bombay and Gurgaon with frequent
trips to other places. We would need to board our dog during
those periods.
d) After our stint is it an ordeal to get the dog back to the US? Has any one done this recently. If yes, please do share your
experiences.

Any relevant advice would be highly appreciated.

Cheers!

Hi Shayna, check the threads listed at the bottom of this page. This is a frequent question here.
We have a few animal experts on the site who will probably be along soon as well.

Yes, and its been done succesfully and relatively easily to the US. A rabies certificate is the needfull. The takeyourpet site may give more details. Some states may have their own requirements (like Hawaii). Unless its recent India does not quarantine.

Best of journey from another pet owner..

I just received this information from a company here who supplies forms for pet travel, so you can do it yourself, there is one part though you cant do yourself it seems, that is the NOC, No Objection Certificate.

I myself and needing to travel next week and need the NOC for importing to Kolkata, still trying to get someone to help!

We have found that to get to India, direct flights are best, but otherwise travel thru Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Heathrow as they have good pet facilities and will take your animals off, walk , water and clean out the cages there between flights.

I will post the information here for others to see:

Please read carefully
India
Microchip is not required for entry into India. However the 15 digit ISO microchip is always recommended for International Pet Travel. See additional information on reverse side.
No Objection Certificate Required – See Below
VETERINARIAN EXAMINATION

Please note that all pets entering into India must be issued a NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE from the ANIMAL QUARANTINE STATION in India whether accompanied or manifest, prior to landing into India .

 The NOC from the Animal Quarantine Station in India must be obtained by your local clearing agent in India. It is required to be obtained in person and cannot be applied for online.

 The NOC is sent to the Shipper by fax or a scanned copy by email . The original must be presented to the Airline in India at the port of entry of the pet before the pet has been loaded in the other country.

 If the pet is coming accompanied, the owner of the pet must carry the NOC copy with him at all times. If the pet is coming as manifest cargo , the NOC copy must be attached on the crate in a transparent pouch to protect it from damage .

 There is not fixed fee schedule for this document at the present time but your agent in India will provide you that information.

 This document takes about 5 working days to obtain . Documents required prior to obtaining this document are (to be sent in copy to India)

1. All vaccination records of the pet
2. Government issued veterinary certificate from the exporting country (USDA document with the Annexure I in case of USA )
3. Flight details / confirmation of the passenger's travel into India / Copy of the airway bill
Updated info from Rishya Hemchandra, Yashbans

BAN ON CERTAIN ANIMALS COMING INTO INDIA.

 Pets/Animals are NOT allowed into Bangalore, Hyderabad or Pune. Only dogs and cats are allowed into Delhi and Mumbai. Dogs, cats and certain birds are allowed into Kolkata.

 The Ministry of Agriculture and Science is releasing a list of pets and animals allowed into India shortly, As of now we have been advised by the Airport , Customs and Clearing Authorities to check with the Ministry and obtain written proof (in the form of Import Permit or Bill Of Entry ) if other kinds of animals (ie Mice, Hamsters, Birds, Fish ) are permitted to enter at that time pertaining to that consignment in particular .

DEFINITION OF PETS VERSUS NON-PETS.
1. Only Dogs and Cats are considered "pets" ... Rabbits , fish, hamsters, mice, birds and the rest of the animal kingdom are not considered pets.
2. Cats and dogs do not come under the “commercial” animal category.
3. Other kinds of animals which we don’t consider under the category of 'pets' might be allowed into the country under special circumstances; lots of documentation and of course tons of other formalities This document takes about 5 working days to obtain .

Documents required prior to obtaining this document are
*1. All vaccination records of the pet
2. Government issued veterinary certificate from the exporting country (USDA document with the Annexure I in case the pets are traveling from the USA )
3. Flight details / confirmation of the passenger's travel into India / Copy of the airway bill
*
These documents must be submitted to your agent in India who will obtain the No Objection Certificate on your behalf.

We recommend you use this company as your agent in India:
Rishya Hemchandra

Cell:+91 984 515 8080
Direct line: +91 988 631 2691
Fax: +91 80 4163 8533
She is a local pet transport agent who can advise and assist you.

The pet must be vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days prior to travel to India. Rabies vaccination is not required for pets entering from a rabies free country. The US, Canada and EU Countries are NOT a rabies free country.

The veterinarian should complete the sanitary certificate providing all of the information requested as close to the travel date as possible but not more than 14 days prior to the date you enter India.

VETERINARIAN MUST COMPLETE IN BLOCK LETTERS

AIRLINES: The airline may also require a health certificate signed within 10 DAYS of travel. This certificate does NOT need to be USDA certified.

RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES
In most cases these same certificates may be used for your return to the Country of Origin provided the vaccinations have not expired. When returning, be certain that your pet is free of parasites.

APHIS FORM 7001/International Health Certificate
This is a multi-part health certificate that can be provided only by your veterinarian.

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE
Have your vet complete the Aphis Form 7001 and send ONLY the APHIS form to the USDA/APHIS/VS Area Office veterinarian with a check for $48.00 and a postage paid return envelope.

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE
AFTER the APHIS form is returned to you then attach the India Sanitary Certificate and attach the pet’s inoculation record.

INOCULATION RECORD
This is a record of the vaccinations given your pet including the name of the vaccine, manufacturer of the vaccine, batch number, date administered to the pet and expiration date of the vaccine if applicable.

NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE
Then forward with the documents listed above to the agent in India who will acquire the certificate for you.

PET PASSPORT
The certified copy of the APHIS form, the India Sanitary Certificate, the pet’s inoculation record and the no objection certificate create your pet passport for India which is valid for up to four months travel within India.

My friend brought his dog to India from the USA

I asked him to mail me the information. Here's it...

Travelling with pet dog is defined as:
Pet dogs accompanying their owner during their import to or export from India. This equals non-commercial transport, where the dog accompanies the owner as EXCESS BAGGAGE.
Pet dogs traveling on their own as CARGO without the owner accompanying them on the same flight.

DOGS TRAVELLING AS EXCESS BAGGAGE

A maximum of 2 dogs can be imported to India, as excess baggage, accompanying the owner on the same flight. The dog must accompany the owner or a natural person responsible for the dog on behalf of the owner must accompany during the transport in order to fulfill the requirements for non-commercial transport.

Procedural Formalities:

1. No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Quarantine Officer at the Animal Quarantine Station in India.
2. A duplicate copy of the NOC has to be fixed on the crate of the pet dog during the air travel.
3. Original copy of the NOC has to be produced in India to get the pet dog released from the customs at the Airport in India.
4. On arrival in India, an appointment to be fixed with the Quarantine Officer for issue of a temporary Health Certificate on examination of the dog.
5. 30 days thereafter a certificate of health to be obtained from a local veterinarian to be produced at the Animal Quarantine Station. Then, the dog will be issued a permanent certificate of health for his/her stay in India.

People intending on arriving with their dog as accompanied luggage will need to have an agent apply for this certificate before they enter the country. It is required to be obtained in person and cannot be applied for online.

He brought his dog through Mumbai because he could not go to Ahmedabad directly. There they do not allow to clear the pet in customs.

Imprting Dogs from UK to India

Hi,

I am contemplating impoting a golden puppy pair from Uk to India, since cat see good ones here. Have already talked to a UK breeder in this regard, but must candidly admit, quiet clueless over the modalities & costs involved.

Q1: I have 3 Options. (a) travel in person to uk and get the pups (b) get em as shipment (c) ask someone who might be flying from uk to india in nxt cpl of weeks. Which one shld i vouch for?

Q2. What mandatory requiements & papers I need to procure, and that my breede's end.

Though I have reseached here and read the threads, most were either obsolete and/or import from US to India. If anyone can shed some light on the subject I be very thankfull. Tomorrow, I shall try reach someone in DGCA if they can provide some info. Thanks all in advance, BalooTheLab

I would advice against this idea on compassionate grounds.

India does not need any more dogs. Every day thousands are getting euthanised in shelters because there are not sufficient homes.

More and more often this includes pedigree dogs, including many labradors.

When you come to India why do you not visit your local animal shelter and take a local Indian puppy home? These puppies are in need of homes, tend to be very strong, intelligent and much better suited to the Indian environment than so-called breed dogs.

If still need a labrador, take one from a shelter here, instead bringing in another dog and denying the ones in the shelter a home.

Also, why are you talking to breeders??? Please read:

Hi Birds,

Well many thanks for quick reply, appreciate same.

I think I shld clear cpl of things quickly. Firstly, when I said Goldens, it meant Golden Retriever and not Labrador Retriver there. Labs are indeed aplenty here.

Two, as for Indian dog - prefer to call them Indian breed & not stray dogs as stray is not a breed, mere status, till they find a home. I am not too keen on getting them. May sound little harsh, but it shares same grounds as to why not I shld get a german shepard or great dane and why only Goldens. Purely a matter of choice which breed you like. Indian breed no doubts has higher intelligence & tenacity, but I am not looking for either to be candid.

Goes without saying, had I not been liking the breed much, wdnt have been contemplating of import as an option. Hope that clarifies.

I wd be really thankful if you / someone can throw some light on what modalities are involed in the process. But I shld not be insensitive not to thank you for your time & reply. Thanks Bird.

Take care!!

I just brought my yellow lab from California to Delhi and after researching many options I decided on Lufthansa. They were great with my dog! Right from the counter at LAX to the stopover at Munich as well as on the flight. They kept checking on him, playing with him and the kennel facility in Munich cleaned his kennel and walked and fed him.
They also charge according to the weight of the dog.So I paid $500 USD (two pieces of excess baggage).

BIRDS, great answer to getting a dog from the shelter, they make great pets.
BALOO, rethink, about bringing dogs to India for what ever. Get one from the shelters.
MEGSANDIEGO, I think that KLM through Amsterdam was just great, they walked watered and fed them, I spoke with the one taking care of my two dogs. Also they have a great big animal shelter under the airport for all kinds such as horses and the whole lot of animals. We use to walk and tend to our own animals befor 9/11 now we cannot go even to visit them on the lay over, because of security reasons.
Sincerely, Gypsie

SHAY!!!!
Please note that India is a lot hotter than San Francisco, and if you are going to stay for that length of time you will be backpacking most of the time and your dog will just be so hot. You and your dog will not really enjoy at all, believe me. When I had to take my dogs out of Kashmir, which was very cool like San Francisco, they were just so hot and misrable Also this is very important!!! you will have to give them BOILED water and no pork because they will get worms. I boiled all of my dogs water while they were in India the 6 years and they did not get any worms at all. They cannot drink water from the taps at all.
Sincerely, Gypsie

And the ticks, at the moment here in Kolkata just walking around the apartment complex we all get ticks on us, and nothing seems to work on the puppies....tried it all. Thankfully they leave for the US next month. Kolkata has not been the best city to bring pets to in India, there is really no vet support available here for your pets, unless you want to go to New Market in downtown its pot luck to see if you can find dog food in the stores, and everyone here seems to hate dogs. Even the local die hard dog owners complain about how bad it is here for their dog children.

To anyone thinking of bringing their pets with them, please think of the animals health whilst they are here, at the least bring a doggie first aid kit with you and be on email or speaking terms with a home based vet whom you can call....

We had one scary incident where our lab nearly died, and there was absolutely no local vet help. It was give her water, if she lives she lives !!!! WTF diagnosis is that! Luckily our US based vet was able to help us out with a long distance diagnosis and we were able to get some meds to fix her stomach virus/infection that probably would have killed her.
