Bringing a stray dog from Goa to the UK
Hi there.
My friend is in Goa on holiday and has found a stray dog she has become very attached to. If anyone can tell me the length of time the dog would have to be in quarantine from and the costs etc to bring him over to the UK (eventually), that would be great! Cheers Mish |

I know of a woman who brought two dogs back from India..and I believe it was 6 months in quarantine...but that was for the US. And that was many, many years ago...

I think you'll find much the same - dog stays in quarantine, it will need various vaccinations and, rabies shots after which time, it should be able to be released to your care.
Nice gesture too - bringing a stray back home to give it a better life. Cheers Zoltan

I suggest to contact Marion of Stichting Aai (www.stichtingaai.nl). She has lots of experience with bringing dogs out of India. She will be in Goa late November. She can also advice how to deal with the quarantine issue, there are different options, some may work out cheaper and nicer for the dog.
Also for travel arrangement I suggest you contact Angeline of the TravelBar as she has organised animal transport before. I would be happy to talk to your friend but I can not PM you my number yet. Perhaps we can arrange to meet. Last edited by birds : Nov 10th, 2008 at 13:56. Reason: Can't spell |

Animal immigration
If your friend is staying in India for some considerable time then she can possibly arrange the microchip, blood tests, rabies shots, further blood tests, in India to avoid the painful quarantine issue on arrival, but she'll need to confirm that the Indian vet is properly registered and recognised by DEFRA.
If she decides not to do that and attempt the quarantine route, she'll be extremely hard pushed to find a carrier that will agree to transport any animal into UK territory without official documents, because DEFRA will come down on them and their organisation like a ton of bricks, and even if she does manage to find someone who will transport the animal without documentation, if she does arrive in the UK with an unlicensed animal without prior consent, she could be hit with a whopping fine and even a small custodial sentence, with the dog either being not allowed off the plane or most probably allowed off, given water and food, and then destroyed. As difficult as it is to leave any dog behind, I would suggest if she really wants to make a difference, she should seriously consider adopting one of the thousands of abandoned and abused dogs in this country and giving it a good home. I have transported animals into the UK before, and it's a very painful and very expensive procedure. If you do need anything more specific, drop me a line. Good luck. Woof woof. |
