Hi, my husband recently got a job in Delhi requiring him there in a couple weeks. I'll be following in three months with our Shiba Inu. What is the best airlines/travel route? I really wanted to take Virgin (NYC-LONDON-DELHI) since I have a bazillion Flying Club points and they seem to have a good program, at least to Heathrow. But the UK/DEFRA requires at least 6months prep (blood tests etc) and I will be moving in Dec/beginning of Jan. A couple threads recommended Lufthansa with a stopover in Frankfurt. Other good airlines for pets? Also, what do you guys think of a non-stop flight (Continental)? Thank you!!!

I'm taking my dog from San Francisco to Mumbai in October. If I had an option of a direct flight of less than 12 hours, I would have definitely opted for that ... my biggest worry is about the pet being boarded on to the next leg of flight safely ... with a direct flight that would have been solved. But I don't have that option so I'm flying Lufthansa. From what other India mikers have recommended and what I have read elsewhere, Frankfurt's pet facilities seem really good. They will walk and feed the pet before loading it on to the next flight. Moreover, they do not have any requirements for documents, etc.. We only need to have the NOC from India and health certificates from the US.

The long running thread Taking a dog to India? will deal with a lot of the issues you must be considering right now.

Flying with dogs
I flew from Delhi to US on Thai Airlines with my little 11 kg dog in the cabin with me - I was held up in the line at my Tokyo layover as they were checking whether or not he should go in cargo even though I had paid his passage in advance.
Coming back to India last year I used KLM - this time with 2 dogs! It was great: the little dog was in the cabin with me and the other was in cargo, but well cared for - layover in Amsterdam where KLM has a veterinary hanger I(dogs are fed, walked, checked by vets). When I travel with my dog again it will be on KLM - service was great. By the way, when I arrived in Delhi last year, my dog was brought out to the baggage area by a KLM attendant. He helped me all the way to my taxi - there was no one checking documents - we walked right out of the airport. I had the official health certificates issued by US Dept of Agriculture but no "No Objection Certificate" I(just now heard about it for first time!). |
