Well ..... I still support our indigenous people by buying a nice new comfy pair of deer moccasins for reading by the fireside - every couple of years or so. The world's got enough synthetic and/or machine made crap in it these days.

it took me a long time to reconcile buying manmade nonleather shoes. years ago i only wore canvas shoes, but they're not always practical, or the most comforable. i don't like the idea of supporting the petro chemical industry either, so i lingered in indecision for a long while until finding a couple of shoe manufacturers that i feel pretty good about. it took me a l-o-n-g time to research the info, since fair-trade was also part of the equation.

i still own a pair of ugg-like sheep skin and fur boots that are the most amazingly warm winter footwear that i've ever worn. now that i no longer wear animal skins, i find myself telling myself that it's a bit on the hypocritical side to be wearing them still. but giving them away means someone else is wearing them, and enjoying warm feet. so, for now, i bless the sheep everytime i slip into them. probably how those deerskin slippers feel, darn comfy, cozy. what to do...

i second the changing of the title, since the sarcastic one in place now may lead some to think that it is something other than it is.

I second that one. Question is, as long as eating meat is allowed (is it still? ), it's a shamefull waste not to use the byproducts of the meatproduction. Apart from the fact that you should treat animals well be it dogs, pigs, cows or snakes, it is a very western and maybe hypocritical approach to forbid the use of 'domestic'animal products.

Why is that hypocritical and what's wrong with being very Western? Each country has its own ethics and should have laws in place to protect them. The EU isn't stopping the Chinese from eating dogs, do they? The EU is concerned about what happens in their own countries, and rightly so.

Nobody gets upset about McDonalds in India not serving beef burgers. If I was criticising that you would tell me to respect Indian customs.

In the same spirit it should be respected that Europeans regard cats and dogs as companions.

First of all, I don't know if they eat dogs in China. IF they do, then what's wrong in using the (left over) fur in apparel? Isn't that similar to using the cow's skin (leather) after it is slaughtered. No? After all, leather is sucha big hit here in the US and in many of the western european countries..

Shakti eludes to the human psychology behind why people may want to treat these animals differently. The explanation highlights, IMHO, irrational behavior. We should treat all the animals the same (unless they are pests and our threatening our lifestyle) regardless of how "human" some of them may seem.

Last time I checked China was a sovereign state so well meaning petitions from frustrated well meaning outsiders are very properly done on the internet. It doesn't involve any waste of paper..

So true.

Frankly, forget the petitions. There is only one thing that each of us can do that has the slightest hope of any success whatsoever: don't buy the stuff.

Lightbulb Supply & Demand

If there is a demand for furs I think it should be OK. If a country decides to ban it then that should be OK as well. Let the market decide these issues, as they usually do. Education helps changing people's minds about certain products; though that may take time; sometimes even generations. Merely banning also will increase illicit trade, smuggling rackets etc. Stiff penalties should follow such banning.
