Hello Bacri!
Sorry I can't really help you with your query! I hardly saw any cats when I was in India - mostly dogs. You have some really lovely photographs on your site. Best of luck with your project! C |

That cat on your home page is very like my cat!
You can read about my feline family -->here I'm afraid that cats are rather low-status animals here, in fact someone once told me they are regarded equal to rats. Most of the cats that you see will be feral, street cats. They are kept as pets by poor people, more rarely by the better off. I see expensive cat food in supermarkets, and they wouldn't have it on the shelves if it didn't sell, so there must be more pet cats than I ever see --- but the choice animal here is the dog.

love the photos! the cat in "enfant" in the cambodia set looks just like one of mine (I have three.) I would love to have a copy of the photo of the monk kissing the cat in tibet....
I agree with nick...cats really aren't thought of very well in india. unfortunately, most of the cats I've seen were starving. but the healthiest looking cats I've seen were in fort cochin in kerala. fat cats by the beach sneaking the fishermen's catches!

Feral cats are every where in India. Often you will find them mooching for food near open air dhabas/restaurants or scrapping in alleys and up trees late at night. Below is a world-class photo

There are plenty of cats here in West Bengal. However, on travelling, I found comparatively few in other areas. Most of the cats are domestic although they roam around freely and are notorious for theft of food materrials (mainly fish and milk)from household kitchens, although loved by many housewives.
We have 2-3 cats always roaming in our premises. I appreciate your love for this cute animals.

I can not think of any Indian religious or ceremonial matter which involves cats.
Perhaps the most prominent Indian person involved in animal care, including cat care, is Maneka Gandhi. There is a Swiss woman in Goa which houses a few hundred cats every year. Her average is around 300 but one year she did just over 500. All strays, which she sterilises, vaccinates and gives a 'dowry' (a food bowl, a belt, a bottle of shampoo and a certificate with name, age and colour of the cat). Might be worth taken photos of. |

Where does she stay? Any website or something of that sort? bacri, there are many cats in Mumbai and most have bonded with the fishermen. Surprise, surprise If you walk through any fishmarket you can come by excellent photos. In fact, not just in Mumbai. Photo ops would be better still in small fishing villages anywhere along the coast. We had some beautiful encounters in northern Kerala. |

I may be generalizing , but most of the Keralites I have met have tonnes of cat stories from their childhood
Including one rather hilarious incident that involved my ex-roomie at 6 and his elder 8 year old brother apparently a semi-domestic cat had a month odd old litter in his house and our guy and his brother had a bet if kittens can laugh They tried to make the kittens laugh by crouching in front of the litter and making Jim carey faces in front of them one of the kittens didn't take this intrusion too kindly and gave the elder bro a nasty gash Last edited by abhi182 : May 25th, 2008 at 16:53. |

I got one of ours to speak on the phone to Mrs N yesterday evening!
A four-week kitten isn't much longer than your hand, and unlikely to deliver much of a punch. The mother, on the other hand, may well take a very serious view of jokes being told to her children! |

yeah, I guess it wouldn't have been too nasty a gash
The kittens got to stay after the incident is what he told me coming to think of it, the guy couldn't make even humans laugh (no thanks to his rather lackluster delivery style) even if he had a genuinely funny joke in his repertoire Assuming his brother wasn't much different, the angry kitty probably saved his siblings from some serious childhood mental trauma ![]() |
