It is as much superstition as lack of knowledge.
Geckos are considered bad, and yet they are great eaters of our indoor insects --- mine don't seem to do too much to lower the mossie population, though .And we have another snake! the gardening lady saw it this morning. She said it was yellow, so I am guessing that it is another rat snake. Now I am worried that we have split up a couple, and I suggest ed to Mrs N to ask the government people if they can bring the first one back! ![]() Apparently there used to be more bushes on the opposite empty plot, and then big poisonous snakes would come. But, apart from taking necessary precautions and care, I am inclined not to worry but just let them be. I wouldn't care to let long grass grow up in the garden, and then go walking in bare feet/open sandals, though!

Superstition, yes I can see that.
The BBC has just run a series of ‘Conserving Endangered Species' last week. The programme centred on two creatures from India. The Bengal tiger, a beautiful creature, the second was the cobra, another beautiful creature. Methinks; If the cobra was covered in long multi coloured fur, had a cute little nose, and floppy ears, in spite of the fact that it could kill with its bite, it would be looked on quite differently. It is to some, including myself, a beautiful creature. Strange note here: When I was Instructing industrial personnel in chemical handling, I used to show a slide taken from a newspaper I picked up in Goa in 1997. ‘Mr Arun Kumar a herpetologist, has been bitten by sixteen of the worlds most dangerous snakes including the Cobra, Viper, Black Mamba and many others, Mr Kumar continues to enjoy perfect health. But, every one of the snakes died less than one minute after biting him. Bit like my wife really. I send her in front, the snakes scarper instantly. NB: Extract from same newspaper, The cobra alone kills over three thousand people in India every year. (a bit like politicians in England then?) ~I woulden't mind dying from a snake bite, its the business of having to stay dead that scares the S*** out of me~ Last edited by Barryjames : Jul 13th, 2007 at 19:00. Actually outside the garden but close.
Can someone give an ID for this one please? What a little sweetie, eh? I can't help but fall for a smile like that ---which is why Mrs N mostly keeps me in the house!. ![]() For scale, I guess this pic is not too far off life-size: the leaves are about grass size. In fact, I guess they are grass! |

It was certainly much more afraid of us than we were of it --- although we kept a respectful distance, just in case.

the sort of trinket you put around your neck?
Perhaps not ![]() After another look through my small book... could it be a water snake? There is a flooded plot next door, and the canal runs just one block away. |

Thanks for the link to the pic of Mrs N's alta-ego!
Looks like no definite id for my snake, then, yet, but lots of suggestions. Anyway, my days of posting, "Snakes? No way!" In the Chennai threads are over ![]() |

About a year ago one of my pups got killed by a snake. We never knew what it was but when last week we saw a cobra so we assumed that would have been the culprit.
But than yesterday we found this Russell viper on the other side of the garden so we are still not sure. Both are very venomousness. It is a good time for snakes, at the moment we are finding at least 1 or 2 every week. They do not bother me so we just leave them alone although I am of course sad about the pup and am a bit worried for my other dogs. |

Whoa... one of my kittens would be a mere snack to that monster.
I bet you don't go for bare-foot walks in the dark . |
