No, I don't work in a shelter. I take care of the street dogs (feeding, vaccinating, spaying etc ...) close to our home, and I have been collecting donations for shelters. But that has dried up a bit this year as I was sick for a while.

Hello!
So today I finally got into my apatment, but when I got to my door, there was a little baby bird sitting on a sheet of newspaper..

It has all its feathers, but it it very very small...

I put it in a little box with paper towels because I couldn't leave it there.

I'm having a hard time identifying it as I don't know much about birds. I also read online that if the birds skin is red, it is probably a sign of dehydration, so I read on the SPCA website to give it scrambled eggs with cereals and I did, the bird seemed to like it. I know it probably isn't the right food, but for now it's poos look normal and he looks a lot more alive.

I'm not intending to keep it for long because it should remain a wild animal, but I thought maybe some of you had some tips to give me.

Thanks and have a nice week end!

Oh and here is a picture we took...
Hahah Don't mind my black nails. (I am not a goth/or witch or anything of the sort!!hahaha)

Ahhh... sweet. I do hope a bird expert comes soon; I understand that birds need food and water often... but what food?

Can it fly away if you just let it go? I have noticed babies sitting in one place for what seems like a long time, seeming to lack ebergy or confidence, and eventually flying off.

Well on the SPCA website it said at first to give scramble eggs so I did so.

Before he didnt seem confident at all, but now he is a lot batter and his heart is beating at a normal rate.

He flies only short distances like from my hand to his box...

Hahah his "cardbox" to be precise!
Nothing fancy here :P

We are already attached even though it's only been a day.

But we are leaving in a year and by then it wont be wild enough to go back outside...

So I don't know what to do!

Edit: Also, during the day I need to feed him very hour or 2... and I'm quite busy during the week

Bird

hm, so today the bird has been more energetic, he comes out of his box and jumps around on my boyfriends belly and on his keyboard.

We were told by a vet we know in canada to feed it good quality cat food... So I guess we will do that soon...

I wouldn't worry about that; my wife (and I) have rescued a few small birds that couldn't fly or feed themselves in our time, with a low success rate to be honest, but once I was comfortable that they could fly - I just opened the French Windows/garage door etc and poof they were gone. If yours gets too domesticated, with a year to go, hey there's a mating season in between so you'll still be ok, and so will it, IMO. There's possibly a parrot around Sadashiv Peth, Pune that I rescued decades ago perhaps - one fantasizes sometimes - parrots live a loooongggggg time.

If they can't fly, then its different - like this bloody pigeon we had...but that's another story.

I'm glad you didn't mishear what he said and take it to be "to feed it AS good quality cat food"

Good luck - and Enjoy.

The German website for wild bird babies says NOT to feed cat food, nor meat, nor milk products, nor (human) baby food!

They recommend insects as the best food (but NOT living maggots, dead ones are ok, and NOT ants, bees, wasps etc). If that is not possible you can give hard boiled (not fried) egg yolk mixed with a little curd.

I would contact a vet here in Pune because somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to remember that there is a bird sanctuary here somewhere. Vets should be able to help you with that. Since you are close to Koregaon Park you could try Dr Pardeshi at Fur & Feathers, mobile: 9850893869.

@aarthi777, I think best is you open your own thread, then you will get better advice! welcome to the forum anyway!

arianex, here is a (German) site with pictures of many wild baby birds, maybe you can find out which one yours is?

http://www.wildvogelhilfe.org/aufzuc...estimmung.html

I will be glad to translate for you once you think you found the species.

And btw, very nice of you that you're taking care of the little guy!

Well, bad news, we had identified it, 10 minutes ago he was trying to fly and we kind of let it alone. Then he went back in his box and started having some wort of seisure and died. He seemed to be suffering a lot in that last minuted and I was hoping the pain would stop or that he would die in peace.

Oh well, I hope he is in a better place and that he enjoyed his last day with us hehe... otherwise he wouldve died alone in the hallway.

Little birdie

Oooh, how sad!

Bird babies are very difficult to bring up. Ususally it's the food (or lack of it) that kills them. They simply need all these worms and caterpillars and what not, what the parents bring, and at a steady rate, to survive. They are simply very fragile.

Happened to me too, it's not your fault! My dog once found one, brought it to me in his mouth (Good boy!!) It ate and pooped but only survived one day, just like yours.

At least you tried
