Again, cat and dog import.
Hi all,
Our move to India is coming up quickly and we just received the below message from our shipping company; Ref our phone conversattion, please take note of below import restrictions in India. Restrictions for import of AVI into India : * Import of live animals and Birds including Pets -Docs-Cats are not accepted in India. Any violations would attract strict penalities. Cnee must have a valid import Licence Prior to their import to India from : -The Director General of Foreign Trade - Ministry of commerce in New Delhi . Just wondering if anyone really knows what the story is for importing a cat and a dog. Thanks, Tom |

Hm. The Swiss Indian embassy offers this, for instance: http://www.indembassybern.ch/import.html .
Searching the web for +import +pets +india or similar (try adding +domestic) produces more hits. At the end of the day, I'd just call your embassy and airline company about it.

You will need all health records for the animals (shot records, mostly) and a health Certificate from your vet. You will also need an Import License from India (don't know how to go about getting this - someone did it for me). Be prepared for huge headaches at the Cargo facility at the terminal. Money WILL move from your person to several officials. Birds/tortoises etc. are very difficult to bring to India - we decided to find homes for them back in the US. Hope this helps! |

I needed an import license because I was already in India and the pets were travelling unaccompanied in cargo. Not sure if you need an Import License if the pets are on the same plane as you are, but I strongly suspect you will still need one. |

I brought my German Shepard (my Avatar) from California to Hyderabad (Singapore Airlines - great service - charged $300 + $25 for food /exercise during 12 hour layover in Singapore) in June 2007. He was on the same flight with me - IMO, that is important.
I had all of the USDA papers, after all Vet shots and documents. No problem at Hyderabad airport - they were all excited to see the huge 50 kg beast (to them - a kid to me!). Cheers Nattusbs |

Hi we may be moving to Chennai soon and I know that I have to have all the relevent paperwork and medical information, but what I am worried about is the size restrictions on the planes. We have a dogue de bordeuax, who is around 10 stone, and I will not rehome in the uk, where I go he goes! Will it be a problem importing him as he is so big or should I just buy a plane seat and dress him up and hope for the best! Any info that anyone could give would be really welcome as I only found out about the move on friday and have heaps to do!

We have a lab that size, named Riker...no kidding, he is enormous. He's gone to India before and there were absolutely no problems - people were quite curious about this dog, though LOL.

Hi,
You could contact the Animal Quarantine Officer for rules and regulations. His number is +91 22 27552021. Hope this helps. All the best! |

There is lots of information about all this in this forum. If you just do a search (upper right corner) you will get all you need. No particular difficulties although in Mumbai they now try to get bribes from people who travel with dogs. The mean thing is that your dog has to be fully vaccinated and ideally sterilised. You also have to make sure that you can take your dog back with you once you return to Europe. If your return is to the UK this is difficult as you require quarantine.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks... Yes, it was similar when I went to Vietnam. I would have to bring the dog back through quarantine if I wanted to bring him back to the UK....

Easy method - Importing Dog / Cat to India
Dear All,
Most of the information on importing your pet to India, both dog or cat is very confusing and every agent has a different version. After days of surfing the Net, I found the right information - totally clear and transparent. DOG IMPORT PROCEDURAL FORMALITIES IN INDIA Pet Vacations India assists you in the procedures / formalities required in India for importing of dogs. At present, this service is available by us only from Mumbai city in India. Travelling with pet dog is defined as: Pet dogs accompanying their owner during their import to or export from India. This equals non-commercial transport, where the dog accompanies the owner as EXCESS BAGGAGE. Pet dogs traveling on their own as CARGO without the owner accompanying them on the same flight. .............................. .............................. .............................. ........................... DOGS TRAVELLING AS EXCESS BAGGAGE A maximum of 2 dogs can be imported to India, as excess baggage, accompanying the owner on the same flight. The dog must accompany the owner or a natural person responsible for the dog on behalf of the owner must accompany during the transport in order to fulfill the requirements for non-commercial transport. Procedural Formalities: No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Quarantine Officer at the Animal Quarantine Station in India. A duplicate copy of the NOC has to be fixed on the crate of the pet dog during the air travel. Original copy of the NOC has to be produced in India to get the pet dog released from the customs at the Airport in India. On arrival in India, an appointment to be fixed with the Quarantine Officer for issue of a temporary Health Certificate on examination of the dog. 30 days thereafter a certificate of health to be obtained from a local veterinarian to be produced at the Animal Quarantine Station. Then, the dog will be issued a permanent certificate of health for his/her stay in India. People intending on arriving with their dog as accompanied luggage will need to have an agent apply for this certificate before they enter the country. It is required to be obtained in person and cannot be applied for online. The NOC document takes about 5 working days to obtain. I have taken this information from http://www.petvacations.in/dogimportindia.php They helped my brother in importing our dog and cat from Miami - these guys were really cool and we had no problem in India - our pets were released in an hour of landing. |
