A Dog to India

I think that this has been addressed somewhere already in the forums, but I can't find it.

Has anybody brought a dog to India from overseas (either Europe or the USA)? I am planning to relocate in the near future, and I am wondering whether my dog can handle the trip, and the climate once we get there.

Having already had a bad experience with taking a dog overseas (to Africa - she died within 6 months) I am really afraid to try this again, but my wife and I are both very attached to the dog. She's a big breed (a shepherd). Any advice would be appreciated.

It will depend on the dog. what kind of shepherd is she? There are German Shepherds in India so that breed will survive. Also, You may have to pamper your dog till she acclimates. A friend's from the US kept having the runs till they switched to bottled water.

Which part of India are you relocating? Somehow the thought of a German Shepard doesn't seem to fit in humid Southern India.

i know a couple of great danes in south india that live on the beach. they were born there and are doing just fine despite liberal dosings of biocides for mites. sometimes they look a tad hot.

saw a irish setter in laos that was relocated from boston go completely insane.

Thanks, folks - maybe the possibilities are not as dismal as I was afraid. Our dog is a King Shepherd - like a German Shepherd, but with longer hair. And I was planning on going south.

Does anybody have any idea what customs will look for on taking a dog into the country? any required shots, etc.?

If you love your dog then do him a favour & leave him at home.

I agree with the last statement. The fact that other Shepherds live here doesn't mean yours will be fine. Those that are born here are used to the heat. How old is your dog?

Problems with the climate could be handled if you keep the dog inside an AC room as much as possible during the hot months.

Sad fact is that vets are not up to date here with knowledge of illnesses and possibilities of treatment. If your dog gets seriously ill here he has a smaller chance of survival than in the US. There are no hospitals here for animals, and places like the Blue Cross etc are horrific (dirty, cramped, meds and diagnostics not available etc), you wouldn't want to bring your pet there.

And what about the flight? You can't take a dog on board with you, he has to fly in the luggage department. Yes, they have special kennels there for animals but I would never ever subject my animal to such an experience. If your dog is a more nervous type and very attached to you it can be very traumatising.

Don't know about restrictions bringing a dog in - normal vaccinations and health certificate is probably enough. The airline will be able to advice you on that. The bigger problem is once you want to return to the US. Bringing an animal back from India to the US might have stricter regulations, maybe quarantine etc. Check this out beforehand!

All in all I would opt for finding a good place for your dog in the US. How long are you planning to be in India?

Please leave your dog at home. By bringing her to India you are thinking of yourselves and not her. If the flight doesn't kill her it will terrify her. Imagine the noise of being in the hold, even with sedation. I have heard so many stories of the airlines forgetting to give animals water or leaving them in the blazing hot sun on the tarmac for hours.

If you really love her then please leave her with friends or even rehome her. Indis is not a place for loved animals to be.

Which city in India are you going to? If it is bigger cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, you would not really have many issues. Flight can be a concern, dont let the dog move around Indian Airports. If you are sure that you have to take her with you, break the journey and make sure she flies direct to an Indian city where she will be picked up. For eg - fly to Frankfurt.. Receive the dog there and stay there for a day or two, and again send her to Bangalore in lufthansa direct flight and pick her up in Bangalore..

I have a friend, who moved her dog from UK to Bangalore and for every vacation back she takes her along to Europe. For her, flying her dog is as simple as her taking the flight. Might be an extreme example, but there are people who do it without a worry.

Does she take her dog back to UK?

I would have thought that shouldn't be possible without six months quarantine?

In my case I am returning to India (R2I) after 25+ years in North America. I will be taking my german shepard, to him I am his father, mother, brother all in one. It will be a one way trip for both of us. My parents have dogs, a very good vet and I am thinking of starting a dog kennel place with the plan of tying with the vet. I will decide the bet approach after I go to Hyderabad. It will be easy to hire people, but, training them to handle and love for jobs will be required. It takes special skills and not everyone has the love for doing this. No harsh treatment will be allowed under any circumstance.

I agree that visitors to India should not take their pets to India. Find a boarding place, many vets in the US have them. It will cost about $20-$25 per day, but, well worth it and you'll have peace of mind.

Cheers
