Yet Another Delhi Hotel Question........

Me: 60+ guy – still can’t deal with the number! – budget traveler/backpacker, rider of chicken buses all over Central America, etc., but feeling a few new aches lately, and in need of a couple of more creature comforts than I needed 20 years ago. First trip to India and thought Karol Bagh area sounded OK, but lately some postings and reviews have me questioning that.

Right now, primarily concern is clean sheets, good night’s sleep and reasonable expectation of finding my stuff where I left it. Nice neighborhood to wander through for my first few days would also be a plus. Arriving 2 October and would like to keep tab at under $35 (US) if that is possible.

As always, suggestions – espically specific hotels - most appreciated!

ALSO: Planning on heading to Shimla and on to Amritsar via trains - if I can get through the website! Would welcome traveling companion for a day or two.

Karol Bagh is noisy. During the day and early evening it's full of people, but the most noise is traffic- beep beep beep beep honk honk honk. Stops overnight, but starts early again in the morning, along with various calls of traders and whatnot.

I quite like it after several times staying there, but my first night of my first time in India....well, it was a shock. I still recall the trepidation at the thought of even leaving the hotel! We had no problems whatsoever, but don't be a fool with your wallet etc- sounds like you have travelled enough to know this though!
Never had a problem with stuff getting stolen from hotel rooms, but in season time you will get shoeshine boys and beggars around there looking for tourists to hassle.

Have you considered Master Paying Guest House in New Rajinder Nagar? It's in a really nice, quiet neighbourhood but not too far out from the action. Shouldn't have any issues with touts or hassle. It's not supercheap though.

Hotels in India should be rated as to their ambient noise levels & wall thickness/density measurements first & foremost. I'll gladly sleep with the resident house rat gnawing at my left foot's pinky toe, a horde of inhouse skeeters circling my pillow like buzzards over a kill & the Indian cockroach olympics taking place in around the plumbing of my johnny bowl. But first cripes sake at least give me a little peace & silence for 8 hours or so while I recharge the batteries from the wild rollercoaster ride that is a day in India. Yes, Karuna is quite right, for a few extra bucks, a quiet little guesthouse away from the major tourist/centers is probably the ticket for you.

you could try the YHA in Chanakyapuri. 10-15 minutes from CP, nice and clean, and probably one of the safest hostels in Delhi at the moment given its opposite the Chinese embassy - so there is a dedicated police contingent in the street! Fairly quiet at night.

Of course if there's a protest then it could get fairly noisy quite quickly!

Anywhere but Juckazo Inn at CP.. I had my worst hotel experience there.. High Price, Untidy Linnen, untidy room, cunning manager, what else you need to rate it as the worst?

I stayed at Tara Palace in Old Delhi for a few days. Noisy, lively area, but a quiet hotel. I put up a review in the Hotels section of the site. Rs 1400 a night.

Old Delhi in spite of being noisy and crowded can be less hassle than Pahar ganj or Karol Bagh (where I wouldn't stay for free)
In New Delhi you could try the YMCA in Jai Singh Road which is clean and secure.

Yha

I too recommend YHA.
PRO's: it's in chanakyapuri which is a great neighborhood to walk around and, with the new metro, easily accessible to the rest of delhi.
CON's: If u r looking for a party neighborhood i would not stay there, also not too many tourists in that area to share tales with.
