why go to delhi at all ?
With so many international airports opening up - what is the need to fly to Delhi at all ?
Amritsar seems a better option for the North !Shortly Jaipur is going international. Mumbai will be needed for Goa , I suppose. Anyway, your thoughts please... |

Why Delhi? Why drink when you'll only get sober again. Why go out when you will only come home again. Why Delhi? Delhi is the heart of the worlds biggest democracy, where armies won and lost epic battles, where religions live side to side. I couldn't imagine a trip without Delhi. It is also a great place to see how much of an influence Islam was on the north of India. It's just a remarkable place. Serenity and mayhem rolled into one bit city.

It's also the cheapest place to fly into, at least from the US

I love Delhi! There's loads to see and do there! Obviously it depends on your travel plans, and it would certainly be nice to have the option to fly to/from other places internationally, but Delhi is so much more than just a transit point!

Never had any problems in Delhi and never saw why people beef about it...the auto drivers are quite decent comparatively, good foreigners' train office, good shopping for electronics and so on. Also, as one poster said, that's where the cheap flights go into/out of....
Some nice historical things too, and good restobars.

I also love Delhi, probably because is the city of Djinns. Is also a city plenty of monuments and good restaurants, the railways station is so close to Paharganj..., on the other hand time to time I have "love and longing" in Bombay..., but now we have new International Airport and is a waste of time to fly to Delhi.
I'm flying to Delhi next 8th Nov and on 10th leaving to West Bengal, I knew few days ago that Lufthansa start direct flights to Calcutta next November , a real waste of time and money.Jorge |

Delhi is a fabulous place!
The trick is to 'drop in and out' before it gets to much for you. It is hard work but can be so rewarding. Spend a couple of days there, see no more than three sites in a day, and then head out before returning again. I wonder if there is an other city on Earth (with the possible exception of Cairo) where you can get such a feel for its continuing history. You can visit the monuments and sites in chronological order - The Qutb Minar, Tughluqabad, Purana Qila, Humayoun's Tomb, Red Fort and Jama Masjid, Sarfarjang's Tomb, all the British buildings, Raj Ghat, the India museum, and finish off with the awful Lotus Temple (just for the modern humour of it). You can touch the history right there in front of you!

Why go to Delhi?
Why NOT go to Delhi? I love this city, and I think Delhi loves me, too. It must because I only know a couple of people there and still when I come back, the tailor remembers me, the owner of the camera store in Connaught Circus remembers me, not to mention people in my favorite bookshops, so I feel welcome and welcomed in a city of 14 million. I never feel lonely or bored. When the mood strikes - just last night as a matter of fact - here in Germany I start surfing Fab India, Full Circle, Max Mueller Bhavan, Habitat Centre, ICC - just to see little pictures of places that don't appear in photo galleries.

Amritsar seems a better option for the North !Shortly Jaipur is going international. [quote] Flying into Amritsar or Jaipur would be fine, if you plan to stay in one of those areas. But in so many cases, you'd then have to go through Delhi to get to where you're going that you might as well be there. Besides, Delhi has the best shopping ... that's a good reason to leave from Delhi, if you don't fly into that city. |

I am suitably chastened and yes, the moans of the losers about Paharganj, airport touts, the robbery by taxiwallahs....ahh , shopping in Delhi - here I come.
