why foreign tourists like PAHARGANJ in Delhi ?

why most of the foreign tourist like PAHARGANJ or MAIN BAZAAR (as it is popularly known among the foreigners, i guess)to stay to stay in Delhi?

Being a resident of Delhi, I, like the most delhiites, dont like PAHARGANJ at all, as it is too conjusted, crowded, full of touts and fake travel agencies. and find this place dirty most of the time. esp in Monsoon..

IS there any other POULAR place in Delhi, where these tourist like to stay?

PLZ POUR IN SOME GOOD AND AFFORDABLE PLACES IN DELHI FOR A FIRST TIMER IN DELHI.

Patel Nagar, I live here and know that there are few hotels here including a 5 star...

its 6-7 Kilometers from CP and New Delhi railway station, well connected by all means of transport Incuding metro..

The best part is its not a tourist 'Ghetto' like Pahargang, and not touristed at all..

I like Lajpat Nagar 2 - Likir House. Not too expensive, spotlessly clean, handy to Defence Colony for good restaurants, has its own nice market, Metro at Pragati Maiden will by next year be here, easy to travel to railway or airport.
Paharganj is disgusting! I could never go back there - I used to stay in Karol Bagh, after Paharganj but it is becoming too expensive for hotels and a bit of a bustle. Where I have now found is nice and quiet.

Why do tourists stay there?

I mistakenly booked my first nights accommodation in Parahganj when I arrived in Delhi alone back in June. I certainly wouldnt be staying here again, either alone or with another traveller. I didnt like it at all. Then on my last night in Delhi a decided that I would splash out and have some comfort and staying in south Delhi - it felt like I was seeing a different Delhi. Now I know what I gotta do to enjoy it - just get out of Parahganj!

Paharganj is popular because

(a) it has the cheap hotels
(b) it's right beside New Delhi Station
(c) it's close to the Old City and Connaght Place

Its a good arrival / departure point
cheap hotels
and life .I travel around to experience as much of it as possible ,and i find Paharganj exhilarating and full of it .All the different sort of people ,the cows in the road, the state of the road, the maze of wires over your head ,the markets with piled up goods , the colour , the smell, burning rubbish on the street ,the little deals going on in the alleys. i have stayed in many a "nice hotel" in a "nice district "and i find them Boring ,just gimme the spice
there is a word i have been picking up a lot "desi" for me maybe it is "desi" ?

A certain demographic of budget travellers find it funky & fun and their money goes alot further there..... but for others it is noisy, congested, and just unnecessary.

The old saying - you get what you pay for- holds true for that ganj.

The only time there was a hotel in central New Delhi which offered the same value as Paharganj hotels was the Ashok Yatri Niwas on Ashok Road at the south end of Janpath-spacious rooms, hot water, a reasonable restaurant.
Unfortunately it was staffed entirely by thieves and cheats who did their best to cheat guests of their deposits etc.It closed in the 1990's. No loss.
Paharganj offers cheap, clean lodging,tasteless-but safe- food and proximity to N.Delhi Railway Station.
Anybody interested in the 'real' Delhi would stay in Shahjahanabad.
South N.Delhi is full of boring yuppies and their shops and restaurants. We can get that anywhere.I'd stay there if I was working long term but Old Delhi's best for an old tourist like myself.

Well unfortunately that is NOT Delhi at all..and Paharganj is not even old Delhi..

No one...I repeat no one in Delhi wants to live in that area...and you are saying that you experience true Delhi life there..maybe you don't want to chance the image that has been set up in your mind..but thats fair enough.

My only concern as a resident of Delhi is, when people like you, who actually want to stay there and enjoy, assume that to be REAL Delhi and tell others about it...whereas the fact is Paharganj is a small silo in itself and no one gives a damn whats happening there...

I personally have not experienced staying anywhere BUT Pahar Ganj. But I have found that each time I return there, my fondness for the place has grown. I don't know what "real Delhi" is any more than I know what "real India" is. I just know what happens to me and where. Everyone has different wants and needs, and as has been written by others here, I love all the funk and craziness and dirt and people, etc. I also like that you can step off the street into the your room or a rooftop restaurant and have some calm time as well.

Each to his own, I reckon. But from my own point of view, Rock On Parhar Ganj.
