Question Which Delhi Neighborhood?

First time visit to India, arriving in Delhi (Oct. 2) and time was when I would be heading to some super-budget place in Paharganj without a thought. Well, I am still a budget traveler but somehow it is a bunch of years later and I’ve acquired grey hair, a few aches and pains that weren’t’ there last week and a bit more concern about accommodations when I travel.

So here’s my question: what part of Delhi should head for to spend my first few nights in India? I am a New York City guy, enjoy walking and would like to be close to interesting sites. Also important is some expectation of getting a good night’s sleep.

Any suggestions as to where to look & book would be most appreciated!

Ps: still open to meeting a travel partner for a few days of the trip. my e-mail: paledin123@aol.com

Thanks!

Whats your budget per day ? This will help us to identify the place of your choice.

This works out around 800-900 INR. In this budget you can easily get room in neat and decent hotel in Karol Bagh, which is much safer and better place then Pahar Ganj. Both the places close by.

Karol Bagh is also a center place and close to Connaught Place and Old Delhi. And also close to Railway stations.

There are several hotels in Karol Bagh.

Cheers !!

Yes, Karol Bagh would be much better... less congested, better connectivity etc...

If its between Paharganj and Karol Bagh then i would opt for the latter as well , but a lot of folks here have had good experiences with Paharganj as well.....personally i would not go with Paharganj.

I've stayed in both.....hotels in Karol Bagh seem to be of better value, and the neighborhood is more pleasant. On the other hand, PG is lots of fun, though a more intense experience!

In KB I had a great time walking the streets, shopping on Saturday night when the main drag shuts down for traffic and all the street vendors come out. In PG, I enjoyed the company of the "international" budget travellers, and shopping for really cute souvenirs.

For example, in PG I bought a ton of these little "pill boxes" for next to nothing. Saw the same ones for sale at my local Whole Foods, with a 300% mark up in price.

Thanks to all! Looks like I will start looking for a hotel in Karol Bagh.

Now, if I can impose one more time: any suggestions on a hotel there? I will be arriving late at night, pretty exhausted anD looking for a good night's sleep with as few suprises as possible.

Thanks again for any specific recomendations.

Take a look at the hotels section on the site , you should get the necessary info from there.
