I've stayed at hotels on Arakashan road over the past couple of years. I don't know about Hotel City Centre, but the hotels tend to be generally lower to midrange OK there....possibly a bit overpriced for what you're getting in this area. It's not a pleasant road, looks a bit of a dump, not many facilities compared to the main area of Paharganj and fairly dusty with the dirt and buiilding refuse piles given the pace of renovations going on. Better deals under Rs 1500 db for similar or higher standard can be found in the main drag of Paharganj. Like many people I'd been loathe to venture there because of the bad reports, but this year I found it was fine, really convenient, more facilities and as said , much better deals on hotels eg. Hare Poiker (can't recall the exact spelling) Rs 1500 for large room with all the midrange perks... and the rooftop restaurant is pretty good too.
does anyone have the email address of the hare krishna guesthouse? i have tried going through their website, but have trouble doing so as their is some issue going on. it would be wonderful to contact them directly through email, especially as i am using friend's computers and don't want to mess them up in anyway. thanks in advance!

Paharganj
My advice to anyone is to stay far far away from this dump/locality esp right now....under normal circumstances it is dirty, dust, crowded etc but right now it is in complete ruins...piles of rubble and debris everywhere, toxic dust that makes it not only difficult to breath but to even see (I've been wearing a mask for the first time in my life).....even a horrible taste in one's mouth due to the destruction of roads and buildings and whatever it is that is in the air making people feel sick. Forget about wearing contact lenses too. Conn Place is a little better but still dumpy and dirty as well...so if you must come to Delhi plz stay elsewhere!

I am flying into Delhi at 5am next Monday 26th April, I had planned to get a pre-paid taxi to Paharganj and find accomodation there (If not book it before hand). Now I read that it is an absolute mess and to avoid it if possible. I am spending 2 or 3 nights in Delhi, mainly tourist sight-seeing. Then onto Agra & Jaipur. Could anyone advise whether I should persist with Paharganj and if not, an alternative for relatively budget accomodation? (up to approximately 1000 rupees / night). Thanks in advance! : )
**Edit** - I'll consider accomodation up to 1000 rupees, if it's worth it.

Look at hotels section above, under Destinations OK.
Look on Google.
also look at http://iguide.travel/Delhi#Hotels.
This may also help you with accommodation in other locations you may visit....
Plenty of accommodation under 1000Rs available...

I guess and as often mentioned, the other popular budget area would be the Tibetan refugees' colony of Majnu-ka-Tilla, there are guesthouses and restaurants and the usual stuff here.
It's a little out of the way from the thick of things to the north of the center however, nothing an autorickshaw (or taxi) ride won't fix though. Except for by night, there are metro (subway) connections now to several destinations downtown and elsewhere I think, and come to think of it. Because of its being not so central, it's said to be quieter, and with a little less of the usual touts hassle and stuff. (I can't say, never been there.)
Note the area is forever said to be set to be evicted (at least for the last decade and a half or so), but it seems to be going strong still so far. It just occurred to me in typing this I've no idea if the current Commonwealth Games preparations (apparently causing that mess in Paharganj, that is to say apparently the latter is finally undergoing some renovations) might not finally lead to this happening though.

Truly inexpensive guest house room, Delhi/MT

Teaching English in China makes the above 200 rupee room seem like a wild slurge. Teachers make tiny salaries, and you have to give up a lot of mobility in order to save. It can be done, but you live a bit like a hermit. I'm starting to figure out that it's probably impossible to find a 200 rupee guest house room in Delhi, even in Majnu-ka-tilla (300 rups now).
What I want is someplace to lay my weary head after looking for more permanent digs all day. I'll stay in the guest house room only until I find a "real" apt./room. (I plan to tutor university students, maybe teach yoga again, and not return to China.)
So I have 2 needs:
1. cheap guest house room (200 rups or less) in Delhi/MT (daily rental) or a realistic substitute;
2. apt./room w/ private bath in Delhi (longer term rental).
Thanks, Chagall (arrives 7/5/2010)

Hi, how far is Paharganj from Nizamuddin Railway Station?
I've got a 7 am train to catch to Agra, how early would I need to check out and what is the best way of getting from Paharganj to Nizamuddin Railway Station?
And also, is Karol Bagh and Connaught Place nearer to Nizamuddin?
Thanks!

Where to stay in Paharganj
The hotels in Paharganj are good, best thing is to stay there and in the morning ask the hotel to book a taxi for 6 in the morning because of the traffic. It's better to leave early to be on the safe side although its not really too far. We left our luggage at the hotel and came back for it the next day. Although it would have been much better to have gone to Agra just for the day.
I have learned that- A man has the right to look down on somebody, only when he is helping him to get up.
