Thanks Hillman, I have decided to give paharganj a miss and we are now going to stay in South Delhi, Lajput Nagar district.

Surprisingly, Raj's Cozy Inn Hotel is not in Lonely Planet's guide to India. I found this hotel because the 2 hotels that were in LP (Hotel Namaskar & I think, Smyle Inn) were booked and I was referred to this one around the corner. The hotel is smaller with less rooms, but looks like one of the newer hotels. The lobby and rooms were clean, bright, simple w/ fan, TV, western style bathroom and cost me around $12USD/night (600 Rs) for a Queen sized bed. The 2nd night I still wanted to try one of the hotels LP had listed, afterall, they were LP recommendations and I was especially curious about Namaskar because of the brothers and how you can book cheap day drivers through them. But when I went to check out the hotel, not only was it more expensive but the hallways looked like they were being used for storage and room looked like a dungeon. Needless to say, I returned to Cozy but booked my driver through Namaskar.
The 3rd night, I was tired of staying in Pahar Ghanj and getting the waft of urine whereever I walked so I went to Bhogal and stayed at a $30/night hotel (I had also checked out some hotels in CP but ugh!). As soon as I booked it, I wished I had just stayed in pahar ghanj at Cozy. I would go back to this hotel again. I had also tried Grand Godwin Hotel which was around $24USD/night. It's clean, nice and has a free buffet breakfast BUT... for the price & cleanliness I got at Raj's Cozy, i'd definitely give up the breakfast!

Nice review Blu, sounds like a nice place for the price. Just out of interest, did you haggle at all?
I might check it out next time im in delhi with my girlfriend...she needs a bit more cleanliness than me Namaskar is definately a bit grotty but then it should be a bit cheaper than Raj's |

Hey Kidsan- All budget hotels to a degree feel a bit like dives but i'm also used to staying at nice hotels where I don't need to throw my silk liner down. The price is great & its one of the best in good handful that i've seen in and out of PG,... but the liner still went down.
I did haggle, but i'm not one to beat around the bush because I suck at haggling. Namaskar referred me to Cozy and Cozy matched their lowest price. |

I'll just go ahead and post some pics of the Godwin Hotel. It's mid-range budget, clean, nice with Internet/computer in the lobby. It's a step higher than backpack. I had an AC double (spacious room) with TV and free buffet breakfast- i'm pretty sure I paid $22/24 USD. This was my first hotel in Delhi- I got an airport pickup (400-500Rs). It's a good mid-ranged hotel at a very good price.

very true though, as you have found, some dive a little lower than others
If you're interested in just how low they can go they seek out the navratan...some love it for its old-school 'charm' and it is indeed a good reminder of how india once was in the days before hot showers, internet access and all the other little comforts we now take for granted... |

Currently all I can get there (grand) is a 2800 room which is a bit much. The other offers rooms from 1100. This is for our last night in Delhi before we leave india so as long as it is satisfactory we will be happy. We previously stayed in Hotel Classic in Karol Bagh but it was a bit pricey for what it was. Cheers |

The first place in India we stayed at was Hotel Rak International in Paharganj. We found the rooftop restaurant to be quite an oasis while we adjusted to our extreme culture shock. We only had the basic room (Rs450) and the sheets weren't exactly what we might call clean but it had a TV and everything worked ok. We'll be going back there at the end of our trip. I think that's a good enough endorsement

Hey man, need help, i'm really all about the dorms, i'm travelling alone in April, so was hoping i would not be all locked up alone in my room. Any place you might recommend that offers some opportunity to hang out with the rest of the occupants instead off all heading straight to their rooms?

Has anyone stayed at the Smyle Inn who could comment on it?
We were booked into the Vivek Hotel but have recently heard some ghastly comments; people not being picked up at the airport but at checkout being charged for it and not having proff they were not met to name one, being told they have to stay in a more expensive room etc. |
