Where to stay in Delhi - Pahar Ganj or Karol Bagh

I am hoping somebody can help me out with which area to stay in Delhi.
I have stayed in Pahar Ganj on my last two trips to India on my own and love the chaos of the area.
The difference is the next trip is with my mother who is in her mid 60's.
Would the Karol Bagh area be a more sensible option and are there plenty of dining options?
I am looking at either the Hotel Classic or Florence Inn.
What would a rickshaw cost to New Delhi station or the Red Fort for example.
Any advice woul be greatly appreciated.

When i went with my mother, we didnt stay in Paharganj, however when i showed it to her she loved it and we had dinner there a couple of times. I cant help you with rickshaw costs i can never remember!! But i would say Florence Inn is a good bet.
Have a lovely time!!

Mike,

I would second for Karol bagh as well.. florence inn, Regent Continental, Sun Star Grand they all are good and reasonably priced as well.

the rickshaw normally takes 10-15 bucks for Karol bagh to Metro station or within Karol bagh itself from one street to another..

I always go to Paharganj and I love the ambiance and everything there, but like almost everybody, in this case I think Karol Bagh is a better option and Florence Inn is for me the best in the area.

Kat - I'm a bit like your mother and I prefer Karol Bagh. A rickshaw from New Delhi station to there or vice versa costs 45 rupees if you buy it from the Police Booth at the station. However, if you are going the other way at peak times it will be anything up to 60 rupees. There are some good eating places - Shudh next to Swati DeLuxe hotel - Gurudwara Rd opp. Jessa Ram hospital, is a bit noisy but food choice good. Raffles, upstairs not far from Macdonalds also good food, again a bit noisy. For somewhere quieter take the Metro to the Oxford Book store cafe on cnr of Barakhamba Rd and Connaught Circle - some very good restaurants also in the Connaught Circle area. Metro in Karol Bagh and you get off at Rajiv Chowk. It is very simple!

Kat, we have stayed at Hotel Relax in Paharganj twice and will be returning in December again. It is close to the Nehru Main Bazaar in the middle of the buzz and walking distance to the New Delhi Station. I'm sure mom would love it - after all there are so many things to do in the Paharganj area that you only need the hotel for a place to sleep!

Hi, I am native Delhiite and trust me PaharGanj is the worst place to stay in Delhi, its only there because of its proximity to the stations and its central locality...

I would anyday advice you to put up in Karol Bagh, and you need not worry about the commuting part... you can simply board the Delhi metro from karol bagh station..and can reach New Delhi station OR red fort in matter of minutes..It wont cost you more than Rs.10 per person..

as karol bagh is a shopping hub (even though it has seen better days)... and I am sure that dining option would be better than Pahar ganj..

I love Paharganj for all the hustle-bustle and so much happening around. (Just wish people didn't spit on roads as they seemingly love to do though). lol

I loved Paharganj and stayed at the Hotel Relax as well. The sounds I heard waking up every morning were just unforgettable...and have stayed with me as part of my fondest memories of India. Mooing cows, temple bells, the muezzin's call to prayer, and the sound of every possible variety of bell, horn and honk from every kind of vehicle...calling voices, and that acrid morning smoke. Chaos, mess, dirt; that's pure India. Also the Hotel Relax seemed to be reasonably buffered from the street. I didn't really have any trouble sleeping despite the noise.

When we'd had enough of the chaos though, we really enjoyed a couple of nights at the Master Paying Guest House. Peaceful, very nice people and a very clean and comfortable room in the burbs. I guess we were at the stage when we were looking for a break from the hubbub, and the MPGH was perfect. Have never stayed at Karol Bagh, but have heard good reports.

Shasjank - I know you don't like Paharganj, but I have to say that we didn't mind it one bit, it's lively and bustling and our hotel was at the bottom - near the metro station and on the edge, so not hard to get to. The drugged out farangs kind of spoil it a bit, but the Indians there are fine! mY 13 year old was offered hash on the street in Pahraganj but then he was also offered beer, vodka, opium and cigarettes at various stages of our trip - I guess kids grow up quickly in India
