Where to extend visa for 5 days in Delhi?
Dear friends, I have got my Indian visa, which I am very happy about, but I got it for 3 month starting today.. when in fact I am leaving Moscow on March 11th and coming back from Delhi on June 7th, so my visa will be already expired, when I will be leaving Delhi. I don't understand why they did it, since I provided copies of my tickets together with my visa application, but anyway.. Some of my friends told me that I can extend my visa for 5 days on the same day I will arrive to Delhi. One family has offered even to take me there to the place, where I can extend my visa.
I just don't feel very comfortable asking for their help, so I would like to find out, maybe I could do that myself? Where to go and what to do, what is needed in order to extend my visa for 5 extra days, so I will be leaving Delhi without any trouble? Thank you very much! Masha |

For this you have to go to the FRO in Delhi and it is not so easy. You would have to convince them why you want an extension. Talk to the Indian embassy in your country and see if the visa can be modified.

I agree with Jyoti that you should try to get this worked out before you arrive in Delhi. This would NOT be an easy or pleasant experience, even if you are successful in the end. I wanted a brief extension of a tourist visa and after I sat down at the appropriate counter the guy immediately pointed to the visa where it says, "No extensions", and looked up at the crowd of people waiting and said, "NEXT!!". Best if you don't have this visa problem by the time you arrive.

Well, unfortunately, we have a new counsil here, who does that: they saw my tickets and still did that.. I guess I would have to ask this Indian family for help, otherwise, they might kick me out.. I am going, but not sure how I will come back though..
I wander, if I will show up at the airport on my way back with visa's 2-day overstay, what would they do? Silly people, they are creating not such a good karma, by making such trouble for us here.. |

Well, I believe what happens if you show up at the airport with an expired visa is that they turn you back and say you can't leave India until you work this out with the FRRO and get permission to depart. They don't just say, "Well, you're leaving so there's nothing we can do!" India does not take lightly to expired visas.

Don't do it! Visa extensions are available for those who were in hospital beds when their plane left, and you would have to prove it. they are not for people who can't plan their journey, visa and ticket properly.

Well, then I will have to bother our Indian friends.. I will have to leave for Himachal Pradesh on the same day I will be arriving to Delhi, so I will have only one day to settle this issue. Thanks for your replies, guys..
Very bad karma for counsil. Really! |

There has been a member recently in a similar situation. On explaining it to his embassy they changed the dates on the visa for him. His worry was that this was a handwritten change, and he might still have trouble at the airport.
You have two options: try to get your embassy to do this, or get another visa nearer the date of your departure. Any other option will almost certainly involve you missing your return trip (and buying another ticket to get back), you will have to spend hours or days having a bureaucratic nightmare, and some of those hours or days may even be spent in a cell --- which is probably the first place the immigration officer will send you, while your plane takes off with your luggage aboard.... Next to smuggling, breaking immigration law is about the silliest thing an international traveller can do. |

But I am planing everything properly! I bought my tickets ahead of getting visa.. I was told I will get a visa starting March 10th..
Here they will not do the extension.. And I cannot change my tickets because I am going for teachings in Himachal Pradesh from March 14 to June 4th. And I am not breaking any laws. And I am not going to, by the way. Just discussing the way to get out of trouble as I am going there for the specific reason and on specific dates, also! |

You want your visa valid on march 7th; you should have got it after March 7th. That may have been difficult or involve inconvenience, but it is something we all have to calculate into our travel.
You have made a mistake: put it right before departure by getting a new visa, they will cancel the previous one. It will cost you, of course, but much less than the consequences of your current plan. Quote:
Please remember that it as illegal to bribe as it is to ask bribe.[Some] Indian Government officials and [some] Indian people know very well how to handle bribery. The demand may be blatant, but the transaction will be subtle and discrete. You don't have a clue: don't even think about it. |

Nick-H is right. You are taking a big risk. You may get out of most things with a bribe but visa extension? I don't think so. You may even be turned back from your airport of departure because you don't have the correct visa.
Visa is started from the date you apply and not from the dates of your tickets. Best if you go back to the embassy and get it changed. You'll save a lot of hassle. |

Nick is right about all these things - the prison cell and the bribes! I've been amazed at how subtly bribes are actually given. You are not sitting in an empty room with one visa official who is giving you a knowing look and you reach into your purse... You will be in a crowded, hot and crazy room with over a hundred people and you will be behind a tall counter begging for your visa. If they want to stonewall you, they can and will. You don't exactly have the chance to whisper, "Sir, what do I need to DO to get this visa extension." They've seen plenty of tourists who just come and give silly reasons for why they are in the country (essentially) illegally and they are not enthusiastic about seeing another one.
And, just having gotten a work visa extension at the FRRO office in Delhi, I can tell you all those people in there are relatively new (they shift those visa people around a lot to prevent things like bribes) and they are probably not anxious to put their jobs in jeopardy. |

Well, we've done our best.
Something tells me this guy is not going to listen to what he doesn't want to hear. Of course, I'll be happy to be proved wrong. |
