If, or rather when, you go to Saravana's be sure to try their Adai Avial. It's a south Indian delicacy and a bit uncommon. *with* the jaggery and ghee, mmmmmm......

Hi Folks,
Thanks for all your help and to help others who may care to look I've put your comments on the following, together with some other stuff I've discovered while looking for addresses. I hope it is of use and any feedback and comments will be updated. Delhi Food Connaught Place Area Caventers - Block G (? See Wengers, could be Radial Road 3) in Inner Circle - milk shakes, vanilla & pineapple are must try. Wengers - A16, Inner Circle opposite Radial road 3, the hallmark Delhi Bakery and confectionary shop, just beside Caventers in Inner circle in Connaught Place: its chocolate caramel, baguettes, rolls, cakes, pastries....... DV8 - 13 Regal Building (inner circle) bar/nightlife, nice food too. The Banana Leaf - is on the inner circle Connaught Place, just around the corner from the Wimpy which is on the corner of radial 1 of Connaught Circle. Barista - N16 (not sure if inner or outer circle) is excellent for coffee. Saravana Bhavan - a chain of quality South Indian veg. restaurants with branches at 46 Janpath and P-15 Connaught Circus, near the Madras Hotel. Some say be sure to try their Adai Avial with the jaggery and ghee. Bengali Market - to the west of CP at the end of Babar Road, for Chaat: the restaurants are of high quality, the food is great, and there are ATMs there as well. One of the best known restaurants there is Nathu's. (courtesy of Wikipedia) Chandni Chowk and Old Delhi Haldiram’s - is on the main drag on the opposite side to the Guduwara just past HC Sen Road. Also in Lajpat Nagar and Mathura Road but I am not sure where they are. Parathe Wali Gali - is the third close on the left up from the Guduwara - 'street of paratha's’; each little shop here specializes in a different paratha. Karim's - is supposed to be really good. In the Jama Masjid area in Gali Kababian, a little lane off south towards the end of Kasturba Hospital Marg, which is south of the temple. Chaat - Another place to get good chaat hygienically prepared is at any one of the Haldiram's and Ashok's near Chawri Bazaar Road behind the Jama Masjid. There are 2 Ashok’s, the 70-year-old Ashok Chaat Bhandar, just on the Hauz Qazi Chowk, at the mouth of the Chawri Bazaar, and the other on the left side of the Chawri Bazaar Road. Pahar Ganj Malhotra - is just off the Main Bazaar on Laxmi Naravan Street in Chuna Mandi district - turn right at the Metropolis Hotel and first left, its on the left. Apparently they have also opened up a new South Indian restaurant called Dosa Please. Any feedback folks? Defence Colony Market and South of CP Sagar - 24 DCM, has the best vegetarian South Indian food in town according to many, is clean and is famous for efficient service. Special red tomato chutney started a trend amongst others in their field. Swagath - DCM, also run by Sagar’s owner, is for brilliant Chettanad food and fish and is pretty swanky. Some say their veg/chicken stew combined with appams and malabari paranthas is a must have. Also do try their achari paneer tikka. They serve alcohol. Andhra Pradesh Bhavan Canteen - No1 Ashok Road near India Gate on the roundabout between Jaswant Singh Road. They serve all you can eat veg/non-veg thalis for 50RS/100RS. Is frequented by media people and those seeking Andhra food. |

** Bukhara in the Mughal Sheraton Hotel: pricey but fabulous. (After dining there, Bill Clinton said he wished he'd had two stomachs so he could have eaten two meals in one sitting.)
** Chor Bazaar: 4/15A Asif Ali Rd, Old Delhi (in the Hotel Broadway). Superb mughal cuisine in an exotic setting and at a reasonable price. ** Amber Restaurant: N-19, Connaught Place, New Delhi. Excellent mughal and other dishes and not expensive. |

I love southie food just like u & rush to MTR everytime I go down south to Bangalore - simply put theres nothing quite like MTR anywhere in India or world perhaps!! So in Delhi I head to the next best - that is Sarvana Bhavan - they have two restaurants in Cannought Place, but be warned that theres a long Q at lunch hours!
Am a great fan of authentic oriya food but then u cant get it anywhere in Delhi - for that u'll hav to head to Orissa & even there u'll find the abso delicious authentic stuff only from temple kitchens! esp in Puri. Gujrati food is popular enough, so u will find Gujju restaurants in Delhi. cant think of a good one rt now tho.hope u hav a great time! cheers Sabby |

I didn't add hotels to the above list as most of them are in the guide books etc and are usually very expensive - ie dinner for 2 at the Sheraton was over 4000rs! (£60). Chor Bazaar was good but wouldn't rave over it.
I'll have a look at the others and add it to my list, which I've done for refernce on my trip so please carry on folks. |

Just to add to the list Gulhati at Pandara road for some honest North Indian food Colonel Kabab in Defence colony. Actually the one in Som Vihar is better if you can find it.. |

Any updates to this list since '06? I'll be there on Nov. 11th and will have some time to kill before my flight. I'm sooo tired of Punjabi food and any culinary change will do!
