Where is the best and safe place to exchange money in Delhi?
Where are the best rates and safe location to exchange money in Delhi, please?
I will be staying in the Tibetan Camp and would like to exchange money there somewhere. As I was told it is better to do in Delhi than in Bir, Himachal Pradesh, where I am going. Thank you! |

My advice:
First check the current exchange rate here. www.xe.com Then go to an official money changer, or a bank. Money changers are faster. One good one in Paharganj Main Bazaar is called Chequepost. Near the alley to Hotel Downtown, left-handside, about 500 meters (a third of a mile) from New Delhi Railway station. do not change with anyone who does other business than changing money. You are likely to get ripped off. A few rupees less than the current rate should be okay though. 10-20 years ago banks did not give a more trustworthy exchange rate than other exchangers. I do not know how that is nowadays, since I never go to banks anymore because of the burocratic hassle there, and how to find them. In former times there used to be a black-market for exchange where you got much more than the official rate for cash. Does not seem to exist anymore. It was profitable only because the gold-price in India was higher than outside, so smuggling of gold (bought for hundred dollar bills) was en vogue. Good olden times those ![]() |
