Where is the best and safe place to exchange money in Delhi?

Where are the best rates and safe location to exchange money in Delhi, please?
I will be staying in the Tibetan Camp and would like to exchange money there somewhere. As I was told it is better to do in Delhi than in Bir, Himachal Pradesh, where I am going.
Thank you!

My advice:

First check the current exchange rate here.

www.xe.com

Then go to an official money changer, or a bank. Money changers are faster. One good one in Paharganj Main Bazaar is called Chequepost.
Near the alley to Hotel Downtown, left-handside, about 500 meters (a third of a mile) from New Delhi Railway station.

do not change with anyone who does other business than changing money. You are likely to get ripped off. A few rupees less than the current rate should be okay though.

10-20 years ago banks did not give a more trustworthy exchange rate than other exchangers. I do not know how that is nowadays, since I never go to banks anymore because of the burocratic hassle there, and how to find them. In former times there used to be a black-market for exchange where you got much more than the official rate for cash. Does not seem to exist anymore. It was profitable only because the gold-price in India was higher than outside, so smuggling of gold (bought for hundred dollar bills) was en vogue. Good olden times those

Hi IM'ers

Anyone else know of a money exchange place that gives the best rates in Delhi? I'll be changing a lot of money, $3000 Australian.

Preferably in Connaught Place or somewhere near Majnu ka tila, but I'm prepared to go anywhere in Delhi if the rate is better!

Another question, I have a gold coin that I want to cash in ( yes, I'm desperate to raise funds for this trip), would I get more for it in India than in Australia? Someone mentioned gold prices are high in India. If so, where can I cash it in?

Any advice will be much appreciated :-)

Kuldehi, many thanks for this information. I will definitely check the online rates first before deciding whom to use. Rajouri Garden is a long way to go, but if they give more, then it's worth the effort to get there by metro!

Hi...

i was considering changing our dollars into Indian money at JFK airport...before we even get to India..mainly cause we have a Gawd-awful 7 hour lay-over there and will have plenty of time...and I assume they have currency exchanges there...well I am guessing they do.

Anyway is that a good idea or not? Could I do it in the airport when we land in India, if I can't at JFK?

Blessings

You cant do it at JFK or any place outside India. there are some places where you may be able to do it but they will give you a very bad rate.

Change some currency in new delhi airport and the rest of it in the city.

As a rule never ever exchange any currency at any bank/or cambio at any airport. If you must, then do the minimal for transportation fare and a meal or two (if you arrive on a national holiday at the country you are visiting) Try and figure out which laces give the best rates. In many countries, the Post Office give the best exchange rates. In India, banks that are authorized to transact in FOREX will give a fair exchange. If you want to exchange more that 4K but less than 4,999USD, then shop around a couple of private authorized exchanges.

What airline(s) ? Some of the recently renovated terminals at JFK are not bad at all

Empress Ginger! Bad idea!!

It's illegal to bring Indian rupees into India. If they find it on you, you will get in trouble!

Lightbulb ATMs

Hi,
while having cash or traveler's checks to exchange, but I always use ATMs for larger sums. You will get a much better rate (my bank charges 1%). Just keep your cards in a safe body-wallet.

While I haven't been to Delhi recently, the 'sticky' IGI page says there is an ATM by the pre-paid-taxi stand.

Cheers,
Geoffrey
