Where is Jahanpanah?
Last year, I wanted to see Jahanpanah. According to William Dalrymple and to the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, it's worth a visit. But my driver/guide couldn't find it and I certainly couldn't help. All I know, from the guide, is that it's south of Panchsheel Park.
Can anyone give me instructions I can give to the driver next time (Octover 2009). Thanks in advance.

Jahanpanah its a term used to address emperors. If its a historical structure and Jyotirmoy would just hop in and let you know about it.

Sorry, I didn't get that.
According to the DK Eyewitness Guide to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, 2007 edition, p. 109: "In the heart of Jahanpanah, Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq's capital, stands Begumpuri Mosque... Nearby, to the north, is the palace of Bijay Mandal..." It says there's a great view from the upper platform of the Bijay Mandal. And it says Jahanpanah that is south of Panchsheel Park. So how do I get there? |

Jahanpanah city forest, a sprawling 800-acre green belt is located between Tughlaqabad and Chiragh Delhi and passes through Alaknanda and Greater Kailash Part II. Originally part of the fourth citadel of Delhi, this city forest serves as green lungs for a large part of South Delhi District. Frequented by nature enthusiasts and morning walkers alike, Jahanpanah city forest is also a favorite picnic spot during winter months.

Way to Begampuri masjid
Jahanpanah was supposedly the name of the city built by Firuz Shah Tughlaq. The Begampuri masjid and Bijai mandal are still some of the landmarks still present. Begampuri masjid was the center of the city and is more like a bastion than a mosque... deriving its grandeur more from its sheer size than beauty. Alas it all lie in ruins these days.
The co-ordinates of the mosque are (28.539255, 77.206507). To reach here, when coming from the Nehru place side on the Gamel Abdel Nasser marg, take left just 'after' the red light below the Panchsheel flyover. Follow the road and after a right turn it will enter a colony gate, don't go inside but turn left on the narrow lane. Keep moving till you end up in front of the mosque! Bijai mandal is nearby and you'd be able to see it from there! |

JahanPanah
Jahanpanah was the fourth city to be built in Dlehi. It enclosed the inhabited are between the Qila Rai Pithorgarh (first city) and Siri (2nd city). Some parts of the wall of this city can now be seen scattered through the area but mostly has been razed for the suburbs expansion.

The remains of the Jahapanah (Shelter of the world) can be seen in village Begumpur near Panchisheel Park. The best access is from a small road that heads east off Aurobindo Marg between the Outer Ring Road and the Qutub Minar Complex, right after the Aurobindo Ashram.
Close by there is Jahapanah Park also at Chirag Dilli....

Coming from Saket, take Mehrauli Badarpur road towards badarpur, pass khan pur, batra hospital, sangam vihar, and take a left(into guru ravidass marg close to hamdard as seen on the map). drive on for a bustop and more, on your left there'll be a small gate on the wall, with a sign saying Jahanpanah City Forest. One end of the trail starts here. Mod Note: Your previous duplicate post has been deleted. Welcome to IndiaMike! Last edited by theyyamdancer : Sep 20th, 2009 at 12:39. Reason: Incorrect Post |
