Where in Delhi will I find winter shawls in September?
Hi.
Where in Delhi would I find warm shawls (intended for winter)for sale in September?
I'd like to pick up a couple of nice good quality shawls of mid. price range.
Thanks.

Asking of course. Ahujasons is simply the main shawl shop I saw referred to on forums but i understand it's quite pricy. My question is if there are regular shops (not just emporiums) where they'd carry a nice selection and I could find reasonably priced shawls year round.
Thanks.

Would that be in Majnu-ka-Tilla the downtown Tibetan exile colony, sort of off Old-Delhi'ish, or is the flea-market sort of affair (indeed many Tibetans, if I recall from quite some years ago) by Janpath still running? (It's an honest question, just to help the poster pinpoint it.)

I would expect that with some reasonable scouting around, it shouldn't be too hard to find winter wear pretty much any time of year and anywhere in (down-) town, no. Perhaps closer around winter better for it, of course.Don't be afraid of these emporiums too much: If they're bona fide government (nation-wide) or state (representing that particular state) emporiums, you'll be looking at very reasonable and moreover fixed prices, quality somewhat assured, no hassle or sales pitch whatsoever, and generally a good experience, or just to get some idea of what a reasonable rate for various items should about be, even if you don't buy there. You can just look around there completely unbothered. They'll also be able to advise you, but generally will wait for you to ask.
Of course if you're handy at it you may be able to haggle a little under those rates on the streets or at regular stores (you could conversely be paying a lot over), but chances are as a layperson you won't be having much of an idea of what quality and such you're actually looking at.
I'd recommend these emporia any day. I think in Delhi they are mostly and conveniently concentrated on or around Janpath yes, indeed probably mostly towards the Connaught Place end of it, and so with some of them right at CP (so as per Nayan's advice). Note there do exist places just calling themselves an emporium, I guess if the sales pitch is on again the moment you set foot in there, you'll know you're not where you wanted to be.
I've never been to Karol Bagh btw, but what I hear of it, I imagine you ought to be able to get a hold of some passable shawls and things here. I also don't know but wouldn't be surprised if in September Delhi might already be stocking up on winter clothes, even if real winter would be a bit away still. Then year-round there will be people hitting the mountains from there, and such.

Could of course be another obvious try. Note it's known as Dilli Haat; Dilli means Delhi, Haat means something like market. I think it more specifically denotes a kind of rural weekly market; Dilli Haat is supposed to showcase various regional products from all over the country. I've never been there yet; it is said to be worth visiting. Supposed to be good to sample various cuisines, too.

If you want Kullu type shawls then try the Bhuttico shop in Bhikaji Kama Place next to the Hyatt Hotel on the ring road. Doesn't look much from outside but a good co-operative type shop.
Dilli Haat is less likely to have winter weight shawls in September though you never know what you might find there - and it's wel worth a visit anyway.

Bhuttico - location?

Thank you. I'm not clear as to where this is. How would I get there by metro from Pahar Ganj or CP?
Thank you.

Useful maps:

Note that Rajiv Chowk is Connaught Place

Looks like a brisk walk or a short autorickshaw ride should get you from AIIMS Metro Station to Bikhaji Kama Place and Bhuttico.
Note the proximity to Dilli Haat.

Definitely an auto from AIIMS - not as close as it looks and the ring road isn't pedestrian friendly at all. It's a large complex to the rear of the Hyatt - there are a number of other textile shops there too. It's a fair old hike from Paharganj to the depths of South Delhi. You do find similar shawls at Dilli Haat but they tend to be seasonal - maybe try there first and have Bhuttico as a plan B.
If you want real good quality shawls I recommend to go to a Raymond's shop. They are the top brand in India. I always buy from them, recently at their shop at Connaught Place.

I always get the Uphar shawl which is useful even in Europe. It has a size of 274x137 cms. If you don't like the "natural" colour, they have a selection of other colors as well.
Beware of buying Raymond shawls other than in their own stores. They can cost more in other stores. I have seen them in Paharganj stores for considerably more than their own store at Connaught Place. My Uphar shawl costs now around Rs 2000. It is absolutely worth the top quality. I carry it with me wherever I travel.
I also bring friends to Raymond's regularly and they are extremely happy with the shawls they bought there even years afterwards.
