where in delhi - buying fabrics etc.....

hi, am going to delhi in may and wondering where i can buy nice fabrics? I'm an addict to cotton and silks and hoping i can score a bunch of those lovely saree or kameez fabrics to bring home. and of course a bunch of embroidered tunics & bangles on the side...
i would only be in delhi for 1.5 days so i kinda need to strategize my shopping plan...

Here's a thought... saree is more of a garment than a fabric..so it might be more advisable to go and get them ready made. There is a huge outlet in South extension called NALLI......all your saree needs can be satisfied there!

For cotton suit pieces etc Lajpat Nagar Market (In south Delhi, Opp Defence Colony) would be one of the best bets, but it might be advisable if you know someone who can take you there.....for haggling purposes and always better if someone knows the lay of the land so to speak....

Note: I am no expert on saree's and the above info has been sourced from my wife!

I don't think you have a problem finding fabric. You will most likely be overwhelmed by the mind-boggling array of choices. I am a fabric geek myself and when I first walked into Pothys in Chennai I couldn't do anything but just stand there with my mouth open, marveling at 6 huge floors of sarees, clothing and fabri on the bolt, from floor to ceiling! I have since recovered. Anyway, ENJOY!

I recently went to Jaipur and was astounded by the choice of Sarees was there at a fraction of price of what is there in Delhi. (Bought a few for my Indian friends).

I discovered one amazing outlet, right infront of Queen Sisodia's Garden in Jaipur and that was a treasurehouse. From them, many Jaipur shops buy Sarees and sell it in Jaipur after jacking up the price by 30-40%...you can imagine the prices for same stuff in Delhi.

These people, called Rangoli Textiles, accept orders telephonically and will despatch you sarees / suits by Posts, payment against delivery.

OK...give it just one try! Tell them that one of your friend bought a Saree for Rs. 450/- and you want the same one....(From Price, they will know which one you are talking about). Its an amazing saree with brilliant Rajasthani art work. It seems the saree is placed under hot sand after application of colors made of colored, ground stones......I can't explain all the technicalities but you won't regret it!

In Delhi you will gladly pay Rs. 1500/- may be more for this saree.

Their Contact details:

Rangoli Textiles

*You can also order Jaipuri Quilt(they are feather weight....made with just 100 gms / 200 gms of Marino wool and extremely warm, or Bed sheets, ladies suits etc.......but see for yourself the 450 bucks saree and check out what I mean here!)

Cheers.
