Goa is really good during the Christamas season. Apart from the beaches, it's churches are very beautiful. If you arrive in Goa by 1st Dec, you'll get an opportunity to see the Feast of St. Francis, it starts from 24th Nov and continues till 3rd or 4th of December.
Else, December is also a good time to visit Andaman and Nicobar islands. Unkike Goa; the beaches are unspoilt, crystal clear blue water and the place is very less commercialised. Plus, being a Sea sanctuary Andaman has a thriving and beautiful sea wild life accomapnied by corals and if you love snorkelling and scuba diving; it'll be lifetime experience. Apart from this Nicobar is home of tribals, and AnN govt. takes people over there with special permits. For WW 2 afficianados also there are huge British settlements of that time which were bombed at the time of World War.

If given a choice between Goa and Andaman n Nicoabr, I'll definetly choose the latter; but am not very sure about the Christms scene in Anadamans

I suppose they dance around the fire to the beat of tree-trunks with spears in hand (joking).

I spent 2 months travelling around India (anti-clockwise!) by train & bus...and it was the most memorable time of my life. OK, so I am a male NRI who can speak Hindi and prepared to be a little adventurous. I got to meet some fantastic people on my journey; fellow travellers, villagers and not to forget the children.

Here are my general tips;

1. Do your research; Web, Guide Books, Recommendations.
2. Plan a general itinerary but allow yourself a lot flexibility.
3. Spend 3-4 days getting acclimatised at the beginning of your travels.
4. Be very careful for the first 7-10 days with regards to food & water after that use the golden rule; busiest food joints only!
5. Bring good walking shoes, simple yet adaptable luggage, pens/pencils to give away to children, t-shirts to give away to adults.
6. Keep an open mind but don't let your enthusiasm be taken advantage of...you'll soon get to know the signs of scammers and con artists. I made my share of mistakes and spent a few hundred rupees when I shouldn't have...but I learnt from my mistakes and made sure I never made them again.
7. Do not have an over-romanticised view of India and do not come to India expecting a haven of spirituality & lack of materialism...the more you expect, the more you will be disappointed.
8. Enjoy and make it the best time of your life.

The only thing I would add is get in touch with NGOs well in advance to see what kind of assistance you might be able to provide.

Oh, and be prepared to loose all sense of time...
