Get a guidebook & find your bearings in it a little? There could be countless suggestions, it would help (and help yourself, too) if you do some preliminary work to come up with what you might like to see.

I faced the same dilemma myself, but your question is impossible to even begin to answer, as you don't say a thing about whether you enjoy cities or countryside, what your interests are, how old you are, whether you want to stay in a different place every night, whether history interests you, or religion, or anything!
Whether you go North South East or West from Delhi, or even if you stay put, there will be things that are worth seeing. I suggest you get an inspirational photo filled guidebook such as the DK Eyewitness Guide to India - it is an excellent resource when it comes to starting to choose an area.

corr...you're like speeding bullets...ok, here goes.....we are 2 persons, she and he, on a budget, hopefully for 4 months, love country, people, animals, travel, and are first timers to india (except in my dreams since i was 8) we would also like to give some of our time and energy doing something worthwhile for others, with the needy (children/elderly/disabled etc) for a week or so. Am I getting the hang of this now????

You have 2 options. Clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Nice, Hal. Poppet, also mention when do you begin your journey, winter or later. Since there are a million places to see, I suggest group these by interests and by state, that would give some order to your plans. With all the travelling, I think you cannot contribute much to needy children/disabled. But you can certainly focus on some help organizations to see how they work.

Please tell as to when you're entering India? If it's now i.e. during winter, try; Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and further down towards the planes of India. If it's during the summers, you can visit Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Leh etc i.e places which're North of Delhi. Weather in India can be extreme, for e.g. the temperature can sore upto as high as 48 degrees in Rajasthan during the month of April May, similarly it becomes quite risky to visit the Garhwal belt in Himachal post the rainy season because of landslides and nail biting cold. So plan according to the months. I am lisiting out a few places that I've lived in and visited, in and around Delhi:
1. Delhi: Capital - Qutub Minar, Red Fort, Purana Qila (Historical and Archtitectural); Nizamuddin Dargah (Sufi spiritualism); Chandni Chowk (Hustling Bustling old market of delhi, really really conjusted but fun )2. Rajasthan - Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur (Palaces,Temple and Forts, Hindu Architecture); Pushkar (Check out the time for Pushkar Fair, it's very famous and really good); Sarisca and Ranthambore (Forest Reserve) 3. Uttar Pradesh - Mathura, Vrindavan (Hindu Spiritualism), Agra (Muslim Archtecture), Lucknow (Awadhi cuisine, Muslim Architecture) Also, the places that I've mentioned in bold are states of India and have their own official tourism website. Please check them. |

By the time you come the main festival season would be over. The next big festival would be Holi (the festival of color) in February. Be somewhere in North India for that (that does not mean that we are done with festivals, there would be regional festivals). Every place is good in India in winters (acually I pity the tourists who come here in summers), even Himalayas, you are accustomed to some cold.

In four months, you could do India twice over
But why is everyone else so stuck up on just North India and Rajasthan? What about Goa and Kerala? Poppet, it's advisable to visit Agra and Rajasthan around December to avoid the heat and humidity. If you could narrow down the places (or at least the states) you're keen on visiting, it'd help us offer better suggestions. |

Any place which has international flight connections (Amritsar, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Varanasi, any more?). Direction, flip a coin or take the wind direction.
