When does monsoon really end?

Hey all, this is my first thread here I'm getting married in Delhi in December, but I understand that getting things custom stitched in a hurry during wedding season can be pretty harrowing. If I wait, I'll only have 10-12 days from arrival to the wedding.

As such, I'm considering an early trip. September would be best for me, but I'm concerned about the weather being uncomfortable then. So, when does monsoon actually end? Will the weather still be pretty bad in the last week of September? I'm trying to figure out, when is the earliest possible time I can travel comfortably?

Huge thanks to any dilliwalas who can help me out on this one!

My guess for this year is 5th August.....

Monsoon is not a big deal in Delhi.

Oh wow, I didn't even know it was possible to be as early as some time in August. Awesome

3 months is a lot better than 10 days! A friend of mine who had a lehenga custom-embroidered for her Delhi wedding, it truly did take 3 months.

I'm in Texas, so I can handle heat - but not days on end of both hot and humid! In my imagination monsoon is not ideal time for shopping. I imagine at least that much is true?

The humidity in Delhi isn't nearly as bad as it is in coastal cities like Bombay. As another Texas resident with several Delhi Septembers experience, it'll be hot and somewhat humid, but will be tapering off by then. Certainly no hotter than last week in Dallas...

i dunno how extensive the ceremonies will be for the OP but for all the weddings in our family (not many just my 4 sisters and a brother having gotten married over the past i guess 12 - 14 years) this is less time than what was required. My sister got married in delhi in sept last year and wed started preparing from june onwards and it was still rush rush rush till the last moment. we didnt even prebook tickets to come back to chennai afterwards with all the worrying over small details and had to stick around in delhi for three days after everything was over. and sept was hot last year. wed decided on sept hoping it would be after the heat recedes and before it gets cold but was pretty hot.

Oh, many of the preparations are already done/underway for the ceremonies - venue and priests are booked, etc etc. My saas is taking care of most of that. This trip would be specifically for shopping for bridal attire. Otherwise it's only 10-11 days from landing to ceremony to find 2 outfits and have them stitched - scary!

for those who actually spend time in Delhi - this poser... when will the monsoon start in Delhi? we have had next to no rain this year, despite humid, cloudy days.

the 15th of August is traditionally the end of monsoon (though it can often rain past this date), and the beginning of the 'monsoon' is again traditionally the 30th of June - but this year both dates are just what they are, traditions; and not facts.

whatever your problems are going to be (hopefully none), they are certainly not going to be too much rain by the look of things!

the best to you and the groom to be from all of us IMers.

The monsoon never ends, it just rains and rains and rains...
Wait, it's because I'm back in England...

Seriously, by September it will normally be far less hot and humid than the extremes of spring and summer.

Going by the rains this year, I'd rather be asking When does the monsoon really start??

Sarah - Congrats. Am getting married in December too and the weather will be great then. Mildly chilly. very nice.

As far as September is concerned, expect it to be cool, non-sweaty. Afternoons could still be a little hot so plan most of your shopping post 3 pm.

If there is no rain, what effect it will have on winter season ???

All my life, I've lived in Delhi. Every year the monsoons are late. Every year they pour down atleast twice or thrice for days. Every year this happens in august and sepetember.

And not to forget that the "leaving monsoon" showers in november.

The NCERT textbook says, Monsoons end in late aug or early september but our friendly western disturbance ensure this never happens.

Yeah, one week we are talking drought and the next - I think I remember reading something somewhere about flooding? Quite a change... I suppose I'll wait and see, thanks everyone for your replies!
