Whats the weather usually like in Delhi, around Jan 13th?

Well I have seen quite a few climate charts, and most claim to expect:
Min: 40f,
Max: 60f-ish

But then I asked my indian friend
who travels there all the time,
and he says: "it will be warm, not much different from this (weather at the moment on a Hawaii beach, kinda chilly around 70F)"
And his friend agreed!!!

I mean.. What am I to expect?
Is 40F like the absolute WORST it could get?
The LP says January is Delhi's coldest month!

So how cold, and how warm *could* it get,
and typically, what am I to expect during your normal mid-Jan day and night??

Warm in the day, 60s to 70 sounds right, warm in the sun. Chilly at night. Don't think it would go lower than 40. I have a photo of me wearing a light down jacket in Jan. but it's open and I'm not wearing a hat! Wear Layers! A fleece type of jacket would be good to have. Do you plan to leave Delhi? If so, if you take an overnight train, it's FREEZING!

Pleasantly warm (not hot) in the day, quite chilly late evenings, early morning
chilly & can be misty/foggy until the sun burns it off.
If you head towards Rajasthan it gets even chillier,,,,,,,,,,,,

Aloha Camelgirl & Hippy

Camelgirl,
Yes I plan to leave Delhi,
as my stay in India is 3 months.
However, if the weather in Delhi is unbareable (im a tropical person!),
Then I will head elsewhere.

Im thinking, "If I get there and the weather sucks, then where do I go?"

The Golden Triangle seemed like a good introduction for a newbie. (correct me if im wrong).
If anything, The farthest down I wanted to go was Gujart & states on the same longitude, figurring the weather can only improve from Jan13.

Seventies'hippy,
I have always been on the line about Rajasthan.
Weather and pollution are my main concerns.
How cold is "even colder"?
Anything below 50F really starts to hit me!

You bring a smile to my face saying "pleastly warm, not hot, during the day"
Sounds nothing like I imagined it!

Winter is the best time to travel in India. You can find HOT places if that's what you'd like. Once you leave Delhi and head south it gets warmer and warmer and more tropical. Delhi area & Rajasthan weather are like Phoenix, Arizona in winter. Quite perfect really.

"Even Colder " means colder than Delhi, The more into the desert areas the chillier it gets in the evenings & early mornings. We're talking blankets round the shoulders, fleeces, even socks cold,,,,,,,,,,,,

For a tropical person like yourself then you gotta be thinking of Kerala/Goa,,,,,,,,,

The temperature both max & min are below normal. Expect minimum to be 5 degree Centigrade & max to be around 30 degree Centigrade.
Seventies'hippy is correct, it could get very cold at night in Rajasthan. But days will be very pleasant. If you are in a hotel with a heater nights will not be cold. In case you cant cope with it move to south or west or east.

Seventies Hippy is right Wazen... Just back from Jaisalmer and the desert town gets chillier as the sun sets..... its like if u're standing directly in the sun, you get sunburnt..... If u stand in the shade of a tree, you gotta be wearing warm clothes to counter the chilly winds....

And in the desert, I had 2 thick blankets, a fire, sleeping bag but yet my exposed nose tip got singed (with the cold i guess..... )

ah, I love it.
it's going to feel balmy to me compared to the 0C weather we've been having.
Even socks!
I hope I didn't pack too warm, actually.

A few days ago it was -20 (felt like -30 with wind) so I am looking forward to the warm weather. I do remember being quite cold at times on the overnight trains in Oct. in Raj. so I gather it will be quite a bit cooler in Jan. I always bring big warm wooly socks anywhere, regardless of the temperature. Perhaps, this time I shall also bring a hat.

The minimum temperature dipped to 3 degree Centigrade last night in Delhi, humidity is increasing so foggy days ahead.
Take the fog factor in to account while planing!

Excuse the slight off topic question, however the weather really impacts this..

Aloha everyone,
First of all I have to say thank you to everyone, I really appreciate the help, it really goes a long way for me.

Looks like I will have to book a very decent hotel with a heater for my first few nights in Delhi. The initial India break-in coupled with cold weather will surely need loads of comfert.

Today or tomorow, I am going shoping (for once!) for some warm clothes,
which will never get used again.
It will need to be light weight stuff thats super warm, yet can fold up really small. Special thick socks, underwear, thick pants,.. all things I live without here in Hawaii!

Still contemplating the escape route to the south, just incase the weather is unbareable.. decisions decisions.

Well guys,
everyone is different,
some say the weather is near perfect,
some advise to go south.
If the weather is in the 60's during the day
and 50's at night
then this might just mean I will HAVE to book guesthouses in advanced.

Under that same note,
since I was going to do the backpacker thing, staying at guest houses $10-$15 a day range,
do you think I will have problems in Delhi this time of year because:

A) Majority in this price range wont have heaters
B) If they do, they will be more expensive than my budget, because of the time of year.
C) Rooms with heaters will be totally booked up beacause, according to the LP, Delhi is "astonishingly cold in January".

Even though I was under the impression to just show up with my LP,
in each well-established city/town/village
because after all India is that Unpredictable.

(Im such a novice at this stuff)

Having grown up in Southern California, my memories from multiple trips in and out of Dehli during the winter of '88-'89 was that it was surprisingly cold. Hot water was not always plentiful....

Wazen, the south is awesome. Good sights, good people, good food. So you will be fine no matter where you end up. Perhaps you should try a few days in Dehli and if it is too cold, move south for a month, get acclimated to the culture and then move north again.

Hey, I was out in my garden for over an hour earlier this week in 20 degree farenheit temperature....and comfy! So you will learn to adapt. Just take it slow.

The cold wave condition seems to be abeting. Last night the minimum temp was 6.5 degree Centigrade & a slight rise is predicted for today. Real fog has'nt set in as on today although the mornings & evenings are misty.
So Wazen you must be buying some macademia nut chocolates while you go shopping today?
