Western largescale type supermarket

Look like l may be heading to Delhi again for work for just 3-6 months. When l was last in Delhi for 18mth early 2006-late 2007, my only major gripe was a lack of supermarkets. I'm talking UK style Sainsburys or Waitrose. The only thing that came close was Hypercity in Mumbai. I hear that stores have opened across India this year but still not Delhi, anyone know if there are any plans to open a Hypercity in Delhi or an equivalent supermarket?

A Carrefour is supposed to open up in Noida but am not sure when it will be scheduled for. Also Walmart have just tied up with the Bharti group and will open a Bharti-walmart but the when and where, I don't know.

It's much better now, but still not at Western levels for supermarkets. Le Marche in Basant Lok Market has the best selection of western foods etc.; Big Bazaar is sort of the K-Mart/Walmart of Delhi, and Home Store in Noida is an ersatz Home Depot.

Try Reliance Stores in Ambience Mall, Gurgaon. It has a furniture shop (Ikea-like but not DIY), Electronics (Currys, Dixons-esque), Food (more on the lines of Tesco's) and clothing (matalan of sorts). You'll find most of the stuff if not all.

Theres also another by the name of Spencers on MG Road. I think its in MGF Megacity.

For specific western grocery, try Le Marche in Basant Lok, Delhi and DLF Galleria, Gurgaon

Godrej has just opened up a large store in Defence Colony - its called World Food or Nature Basket (cant recall at the point but google it) , got a lot of stuff... items which stood out were really the variety of cheese...pasta , rice , they have a cold cuts corner as well... lots of imported ham and such like

At the DLF promenade near vasant kunj , Sugar and spice have opened up a large food store as well - usual stuff as well as imported items... they also have a meat and sea food shop.

YES!! I just stumbled into that shop today and was totally amazed. If I hadn't been planning to travel by auto-rick back home, I would have been very tempted by their CHEESE section!! Alas, didn't think the brie would survive the temperature outside for very long...

Anyway, yes, I second Puchoo's recommendation.

In Saket, there are also two slightly smaller grocery stores of this nature -- with good meat/cheese counters and proper aisles and a wide variety of Indian AND imported goods -- in Select Citywalk Mall (ground floor). The bigger one is right next to the Passion Cheese counter (and next to Pantaloons, if I recall correctly); the other is sort of catty-corner to this shop, right on the way toward the exit from the mall proper.

The DLF Emporio mall on Priya - Vasant Kunj Road is good and has almost all imported brands for apparel shopping. It is supposed to be the most luxurious mall in Delhi as of now..
