Veg Restaurants in Delhi
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can recommend their favorite Veg restaurants in Delhi. I know of a couple in Connaught place that are good. but can't remember their names. I know Delhi has some great restaurants, just wondering if i can get some more feedback from peoples experiences! Thank you. |

![]() hmmm.. Udupi restaurants... love them.. Last year I spent quite a bit of time in Udupi proper... the (real) Woodlands restaurant there is fantastic! Home of the Dosa! ![]() |

Sona Rupa on Janpath near the government run Central Cottage Industries Emporium used to be a good place for South Indian veg food. Early this year though it seemed to have closed.
Worth checking out if they have moved elsewhere.

It's relatively expensive, and invariably crowded. But it's yum. It's called Sagar and you'll find it at the defence colony market. Enjoy!

I had the following exchange in the Sona Rupa in Delhi:
At about 3:05 pm I finished one round of pullao, and went to the counter to order another naan. The attendant looked at me aghast and exclaimed, "Mister, time for naan is OVER!" Only then did I notice that naan was not included in the dinner menu which came into effect at 3... |

Now its the South Indian vegetarian restaurant called Saravabhavan at the same place where Sona Rupa used to be.The food here is good, service is quick, rates are reasonable and almost always crowded. They also have a chain of restaurants in Chennai,Dubai,Singapore and California.

Thanks for that info sggal, look forward to dropping in there sometime this year after our next shopping trip to the Central Cottage Industries Emporium. It was a sad sight for us to see Sona Rupa closed and deserted.

Alan u have to go and have a meal at 'Sagar' at defence colony market. Its a south indian food place and by far the best. And sorry Alan but sona rupa never even came close to Sagar's quality and simbbly delicious fare! I try to make it there every time i'm in delhi....errrr..that is once i'm done with devouring nirula's pizzas. You know if u live in Diu u dream of pizzas every once a while...and drown yr. sorrows in beer n vodka..!
I heard that sagar is planning to open another outlet. |

Thanks romit and indiawise, that's two votes for Sagar at Defence Colony Market. All these places are going on my list for the next visit.
No pizzas in Diu? That looks like a gap in the market waiting for some enterprising person. Looks like it's foodie day on indiamike today! Three food threads in the top four. Any more suggestions? |

There's a new building opposite the Scindia House McDonald's (just turn left on Janpath from Ringo's and keep following the building block, not the street, to Tolstoy Lane). Cottage Industries Emporium has three floors in the bottom of the building. Beware asking anyone on the street for directions; there are a hundred new shops (all run by slick and fast-talkijng Kashmiris, it would appear) known as "Cottage Industries" and "Handicraft Emporiums." Grethen, the road is still called Janpath and its still on Janpath , just that now it has shifted to this new building across the road.
As of today..SarvanBhavan is the BEST south Indian restaurant in Delhi. Sagar is losing the market share and its almost always crowded..and service quality has gonedown over years. In Defense colony they have diversified into North Indian restaurant and I heard even Chinese too... I find Karnatak Sangh in MotiBagh better than Sagar for the money they charge. Other good place to have veg food is Pandara Road market.

This is getting confusing. Sarvana Bhavan is now the BEST South Indian restaurant in Delhi and that used to be the not so good Sona Rupa.
The Central Cottage Industries Emporium has moved across the road somewhere. Pity about that as it was spacious and cool even on the hottest day. And for the Kashmiri traders it's open season until the new versions of the guide books are published. Thanks for the updates, folks! |
