Turkey Day!
I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I'm trying to put on a good old American Thanksgiving in Delhi next week. Is it possible to find turkeys in Delhi (that don't cost a small fortune)? If so, where. If not, any alternate suggestions (I'm thinking chicken tandoori). Cranberries (or canned sauce) ditto.
Thanks |

![]() IM'ers might be interested to hear that the Hebrew name for India ("hodu") also means "turkey". My theory - the bird is indigenous to the Americas, and we know where Columbus thought he was when he reached those shores... So, Happy Thanksgiving, India!! |

I've heard that the French Farm gets pretty good birds. I've heard that they can be slightly pricey but they'll do all the cleaning out and whatnot. Plus they deliver. =p
As for cranberry sauce... Your best bet might be to try the American commisary. If anybody has cranberry it would be them. If you don't have access yourself find a friend who does and they can pick some up for you. |

Turkey Day - have you heard the news lately?
What with all the bird flu in the news, you might want to reconsider your turkey day. (seriously. there's always a first case.)

Last Thanksgiving we looked for a Turkey all over Delhi. Some of our friends went to Jorbagh, INA and Khan Market but no sign of a turkey. We ended up making a chicken dinner! Good luck finding a turkey in Delhi and if you do find one, let us know of the store for future IM Thanksgiving turkey hunters.

There used to be a shop in Jorbagh called Steakhouse which used to sell turkeys if preordered. They should also do cranberry sauce. You could also try Khan Market.

Jalebiwallah:
Can't help you with your search for a turkey. Might duck be an OK substitute? Here's a menu I'm planning to replicate for this year's day o' thanks: Sub Rosa Indo-American Bird Day feast I'm subbing in baked, chestnut-stuffed acorn squash for the big bird (half the family is vegetarian), making Kashmiri Alu Dum instead of mashed potatoes, and adding a vegetable biryani because a feast should be a feast. I could start a whole thread on Shan Bombay Biryani Mix, but will resist that urge. I've made sweet potato ladkes with garam masala in the past, served with sour cream and applesauce, but this year will try the yams with coconut milk recipe (linked to above) instead. The ladkes requires no baking. Or maybe you have a large oven available? I never did, but that was the 20th century. I'm not sure gooseberries are in season yet, but if they are, maybe they would be a good cranberry substitute, in a chatni-type recipe? I think jyotirmoy recently posted a tomato chatni recipe that could be cannibalized effectively? If you are looking for a straight-up middle American feast, I'm short on advice. I've always had, umm, mixed results making cinnamon rolls, fried chicken, and baked goods (in these tiny little portable electric ovens) when in India. But there are plenty of harvest festivals in India to steal ideas from and I'm guessing the pilgrims had to improvise a bit themselves that first Thanksgiving, no? Please do share the results with this forum! GM |

I roasted a turkey in a mobile home oven in Goa one year; it was quite an experience. I really missed the cranberry sauce that year!
Other Thanksgivings in India, I've had tandoori chicken or (good) Chinese food! I hope you find your turkey and have a great day! |

One year in India I was invited to spend Christmas with friends. It was mentioned that Baroli turkey would be featured on the menu. Unfortunately I'd already accepted another invite so had to decline. Was told later that Baroli turkey was the local name for peacock.
Have always been open to new culinary delights so may have missed a great feast. W22 |

I'm going to admit right now that I'm not going to cook a turkey dinner. Its way too complicated in the real world let alone here. LOL
I've heard that some of the hotels do a thanksgiving dinner here in Delhi. Does anybody know about this? What hotels do turkey dinner and/or which are good? |

Good news on the turkey front: jalebiwallah are you or a friend of yours a member of AXSA? IF so, AXSA will make your turkey for you. All you have to do is pick it up. From what i understand its not too expensive but i'm not positive on that.
Good luck with Turkey Day dinner! |
