Info is so important. How do you plan to book the train ticket? How long will you be in India/Delhi before you travel to Varanasi? What date will you travel to Varanasi? Are you traveling alone? Are you female? Where will you be staying in Delhi? Do you want a daytime train or overnight train? Do you have any time restrictions for the return journey? Have you visited Agra, if not, would you prefer to get an overnight train from Varanasi direct to Agra? What class would you prefer to use on the train? A tip......if you want personalised info, you need to give loads of info, for general info a guidebook always wins.

Take the Shivganga, it's overnight with convenient timings and usually doesn't run late, unlike several others. I think there's also a Garib Rath now but that is likely to be weekly. The Shivganga is daily. Since it's your first time, book 3-tier AC. Do it online on www.irctc.co.in. On the train, your passport will suffice as ID proof. In terms of staying in Varanasi, you could just get there and walk around the end of the ghats closer to Assi ghat, which is the usual backpacker area, until you find a place. If you want something fancier, go for a hotel in the cantonment area. But you don't need to book in advance.

Some of the other trains that I know of are: 1) Rajdhani 2) Poorva 3) Samjhauta 4) Kashi vishwanath These are listed in terms of comfort of travel and time taken in travel. There are others as well. Poorva or rajdhani will be my pick.

The Rajdhani has insane timings while passing through, and it halts at Mughalsarai, from where the ten mile hop to Varanasi in the dark is something some people don't fancy. The Kashi Vishwanath, though I have a soft corner for it, tends to run late. You're alright with the Poorva, I guess, though the Shivganga is pretty popular with most people.
