1. did you wish him to carry your bags?
2. were the bags heavy? If you had not wished/asked/indicated him to carry your bags, and the bags were not at all heavy or the carrying was over a very small distance - no tips. If- on the other hand - you are secretly relieved not to have to carry heavy grocery bags weighing 10-15 kgs over stairs/a long uneven footpath, then you can surely tip him rs5-10. The idea of tipping is to reward a person for the valuable/convenient service he has given... and not because he has done some/any activity for you and is now expecting you to pay, though this activity did not add any value to you. just an example - In case of valet parking in busy resturants, we pay the parking attendant rs5-10 when he brings back the car to us. This is a fast and convenient service that makes our dinner hassle free. so we will pay a tip in this case. In case of large paking space in front of a restaurant/shop, where we have parked the car ourselves, the doorman/parking attendant will often come running to open the car door for me. I consider it an extremely superflous service and try to disuade them from doing it. if they still manage to do it I do not encourage them by tipping. |
