DIAL provides a complimentary shuttle bus service for passengers, every 20 minutes between the domestic terminals and 30 minutes between domestic and international terminals of IGI airport.

Please follow the link for details:

Time needed for transfer domestic-int'l terminals

Hello.
I am hoping someone can help with my dilemna.

I need to book an airline ticket from AMD-DEL. I have an international departure on American Airlines at 12:55AM.

My two options are as follows:

1. Jet Airways (affiliated with American) flight arrives 9:55PM. Allows 3 hours for transfer from domestic to international.
My outstanding question regarding this is will they transfer baggage? I have received conflicting info on this from both the airlines and travelers alike. Jet says no. American says yes. One of my co-workers said he did check baggage straight through even when he did not book the tickets together. has anyone else done this successfully? I am concerned if I have to retrieve and re-check bags that 3 hours may not be enough time.

2. Spice Jet flight arrives 7:30pm. fare is about 1/3 of the price of Jet. Would definitely require retriving and checking bags. Still a lot of time to hang around the airport. Does anyone know for sure if any of the lounges have a shower facility? If there is - then I might not care about having that much time.

If I did not have anything earth shattering in Ahmedabad I would rather arrive @ 7.30 PM.

With the 9.55 PM, if your flight was delayed due to air traffic or other conditions, then you would be stuck.

rendezvous point to meet driver or relative picking us up

We are arriving late at night at IGI - and will be proceeding to my sister's residence in Ghaziabad. Given the difficulty of getting directions / locating destination late at night, we are looking at two possible options:
  • Have a taxi from Ghaziabad, which is familar with the exact address we are going to, pick us up. Obviously, the taxi driver would not know us by sight.
  • Have my brother-in-law come and pick us up. Here recognition problem is avoided, but inconvenience to the host is maximized.

So, I am wondering where exactly we set up the rendezvous point for the two scenarios.

- The driver could possibly wait on exit, but there are tons of people there and wait can be long. And, it can be difficult to find people in the sea of faces that one finds there - particularly as neither party recognizes each other.

- If my brother-in-law comes to pick us up, I'd hate to condemn him to standing there.

So, are there more civilized and/or more fail safe options to meet the receiving party at IGI international terminal?

Thanks!

1. Driver stands with your name in a placard. Hundreds do this everyday. So it is not a big problem.

2. You and your sister have to confab, cannot comment on family matters and how much burden to him.

The above two are quite fail safe. I presume from your posting that you are unfamiliar with Ghaziabad and your sister's house. If the statement above is not true, then take a prepaid taxi, and guide the taxi when he reaches the sector/neighborhood in Ghaziabad.

Thanks for answering. Being originally from India, I do know the basics. I was and continue to hope there might be alternatives beyond the obvious someone might point out.

Thanks again!

Sleep in a hotel nearby for the night, and go early in the morning ?

Worrying too much - for this time and age....

Option 1 - Get the taxi from Ghaziabad.......As another poster has pointed out...hundreds of people do it daily...should not be an issue. You can also get the mobile number of the driver in advance...just in case...

Option 2 - Take a taxi........can then call your relatives...they can give instructions to the driver.......

Option 3 - Get your relatives to come in.

Your suggestion of getting the cell phone of the driver might be what I'll do. Thanks for your suggestion!

And what about security checks at the terminal entrance? Does one need to stay in a queue and wait for them if he transfers by A) pre-paid taxi B) free coach?

Absolutely..It does not matter how you transfer. And do remember there will be a queue for the free coach. And there would be a shorter queue for the pre-paid taxi.

As someone famously said, when you are on international travel, either you are waiting or in a queue...
