I had a tatoo done in varanasi in 2001, but it was by a guy from Basque (Spain). I was warned about infection, but it wasn't a problem. I put tea tree oil mixed into vaseline on it until it healed properly. I don't know of any indian tatooists tho' sorry.

Let's turn this around, why do you feel it is necessary to get it done there? I'm sure there are artists but with people worrying about street food etc. all the time there are some obvious risks involved.

Let's put it this way, if I want a tattoo I ask around with good friends or go to some reputable artist who I preferably know already. Asking on some board full of strangers about a place you don't know is kind of the other extreme don't you think?

I mean people are scared to touch the food there and worry about hepatitis and whatnot, but get to work on me with a set of fine needles, sure, go right ahead

I'm not scared of eating street food, as I know and understand the risks involved. Just as I know there is a danger in getting tattooed, but this can happen anywhere.

I just want to know about some good artist's or someplace that sombody has visited before. Just reseaching things....I do appreciate your help.

Teehee yeh you're right I guess. Maybe I was thinking here comes the next navelpiercing teenager... Anyway, good luck with it. Look for hygiene and quality as always, don't go over one night's sleep. Maybe find out on the ground, or check out that place above.

C'mon, Aren't we living in India and eating the same food, getting the same tattoos done, sunbathing in the same Goa, visitng the same malls (Wal-Mart is almost here), wearing the same clothes and taking over one of the best businesses that are on the verge of shutting down in your country just b'coz there's hell lotta talent in India which is ready to draw salaries in rupees than dollars?

Why do you guys still think of India as a backward country? If you still do, what the heck do you come here for? To pity us? Excuse Me ! -

BTW, there's a guy in "City Center" Mall (also called DT Mall) in Gurgaon who does It. One of my frnds got one for Rs 2000 (small one - butterfly) and he does it pretty neat and hygienic way.

Yes, but I don't see you filling these boards with one nervous question after the other about eating samosas on the streets and how to haul a bus and all kinds of outlandish diseases etc.

Take it easy. Of course you can get tattood in India, I'm sure people do it all the time. But perhaps a word of caution to prospective visitors we don't know won't go amiss, if their mind is made up to do it I'm sure IndiaMike won't stop them. For all I knew this might be another teenager thinking "Hmm... are there any more rash and ill-considered things I can do (which I might as well have taken care of in the comfort of my home where I know my way around) on my next trip to a place I just found on the map yesterday?" We see plenty of them here, don't you think? If a foreigner were enquiring about getting tattood in my hometown on an overnight trip I might give them the same advice. (btw We don't have dollars where I live. No need to get so defensive.)

I share your point of view in some ways ---- questions like, what if I get ill and What should I fill my extensive medicine chest with always make me wonder if some people think there are no doctors here, or that somehow the doctors don't have qualifications and experience every bit as good as those 'back home'! Just one example: we could find many more between us...

However I have to say that India is still lacking (or should I be on the safe side and just say 'different' ) for example, in basic hygiene on the streets, in food preparation etc etc.

And, as you know, my spending money is strictly Rupees
