Tailors/seamstresses in Delhi for plus size clothing...

Hello, I just registered here, but have been browsing for a few days.

We will be in India (for the first time) in July, and when we arrive, I would like to purchase some clothing.

However, I gather from reading here that this will be a problem for me, since I am plus size (size 22/24 US) and also very tall for a woman - 5'10".

Can anyone recommend a good seamstress (preferably) or tailor in Delhi to make me clothing?

How to I go about finding fabric (100% cotton or 100% silk is what I am interested in, in nice prints or embroidery).

Also, we have only 3 days in Delhi before moving on to Hyderabad - is this a realistic time frame to have things made in?

Thanks so much for any input!

Then why not wait till there? - unless, of course, you are an even shorter time there.

Sorry for not including more info!

I had to call and get hotel info - I am tagging along on a business trip of my husband's.

In Delhi we are staying at either the Imperial Hotel or the Shangri-La - apparently the travel people at his job haven't decided which yet.

We will be in Delhi for just over 3 days (arriving Wednesday night and leaving Sunday morning) and then go to Hyderabad for about 3 1/2 days (arriving midday Sunday and leaving early Thursday morning). In Hyderabad we are staying at either The Kakatiya or Taj Krishna...again, they haven't decided which yet and unfortunately, I don't get to make any of those decisions.

So really, either city would be fine with me to have things made - but are either of these timeframes conducive to having things made?

Thanks again.

3 days being sufficient would depend on what exactly u get made...

There are a few stores catering to plus size in Delhi which you can check out.

Just My Size, and Pluss are two popular ones (google for their locations)

and something even i did not know till yesterday is that FAB INDIA (one of the best places for Indian ethnic wear) has also started with Plus size as of last October. Fab has multiple locations across Delhi and a simple call to their stores will confirm which ones carry and which one's dont , though inventory is stocked evenly across all stores.

Suits..as in jacket/trouser one's?

Well cloth can come as cheap as 500 INR per meter from Raymonds and then can continue proceeding upwards forever. For my height i.e 5"10 i require about 2.5 meters or so of cloth for the jacket as well the trousers.

I need formals everyday for office and so tend to differentiate between 'everyday' and 'ocassions'...my everyday comes at about 800 INR per meter and the more special ones i tend to buy at about 2000 INR per meter.

So at 2.5 meters @ 800 INR = 2000 INR (50 USD) + Tailoring costs (normally around 2000 at a decent tailor) = 50 USD again, the total comes to 4000 INR i.e 100 USD , but this is just one option..what u like and choose will eventually decide how much you spend.

3 days will be a really short time span to get thing stitched nicely. Sometimes you can find a place that says one hour, which means one day usually. But, by the time you arrive, adjust, find some food, buy fabric, decide what you want... you would barely have time for that, and no time if you had any problems with it. Which means you can either only have one outfit made (usually you'd have a trial outfit to see if the tailor does a good job) or take the risk of having several things made. Western style will be even harder.

Any of the markets will have fabric, tho. You will be overwhelmed by the choices and possibilities. Most fabric sales places can give you a good estimate of how much fabric you'll need for shirt, pants, etc.

Readymade is probably better, tho, in the short time. Mustard is another of my favorite stores that caters to larger sizes, and they have really nice Western and Indo-Western style clothes that are designed for larger frames so they usually fit well and stylishly. They are in Bangalore, I don't know about Delhi.

Even if you don't have anything stitched here, do still go check out the fabrics! Shopping is an adventure in and of itself.
