Tailor in Delhi

I was hoping to get a made to measure suit in Delhi. Is this a good idea? Should I wait until I get to Jaisalmer? Can anyone recommend a decent tailor in either place?
Thanks.

would be better if you could specify your location, otherwise you could always go to Raymonds outlet and you will probably come across many local ones as well but you need to know which one is good and which one is not...

Also , wherever you get it made , remember to prepone your departure date as far as he is concerned.

What is your budget? The best tailor in India is Vaish at Rivoli. Ex-Savile Row father and son business.

There seem to be several bits and bobs around the forum about tailors in Delhi - I remember posting on a larger thread around a month ago, but can't find it.

Anyways, I've had a positive experience with tailors in Lajpat Nagar. Maybe try this one:

Raymond Shop - I-39 Main Road, Central Market, Lajpat Nagar II, New Delhi, 110024. They have a large range of fabrics, reliable service, good quality tailoring.

How long will you be around in Delhi before going off to Jaisalmer? I'd recommend about a week for the whole process: measuring, tailoring, fitting, alterations etc.

I once used a tailor in CP, opposite Nirula Potpurri & Hotel. I forgot the name. Did it in a rush, delivered on 3rd day. Great suit. Quite a prominent shop.

As a follow up to this post, I've ordered a suit from Vaish at Rivoli that I recommended above. Have been for 2 fittings and have another couple to go.

Cost is Rs 40 000 (500GBP) but the quality is amazing (as it should be). The cloth is Zegna from Italy.

So how much do you have to spend for a decent suit? 5'000, 10'000, 20'000?

It all depends on the tailoring and the cloth of course. I've got a couple of nice suits hanging in my closet that cost about 8000 Rs/piece. My criterion before saying 'nice' is very simple: will I be able to wear it in Europe without looking like the funny duck in the boardroom ? 8000 looks like the lower limit to me, the upper is all the way in stratosphere, very easy to spend 80000 Rs on a tailor made suit, even in India.

Second vote for Vaish. I have a bunch of stuff from them, love it. Last suit was about US$650, though I could have spent less with cheaper but still good quality cloth.

Here's a thread about them worth reading through. I strongly disagree with the over-rated judgment.

Vaish Tailors is Over-Rated!

Taylor in Hauz Kas Market, south Delhi

Njorde Style in Hauz Khas Market, B-40, New Delhi is good.
I have had three suits and 6 shirts made there. The guy is an indian that has kived in Miami and Argentina and knows some french and German too. His shop is small and he is very customer friendly. His specialty is linen. My first suit was a linen suit for around 5500.- I might return it for a 2nd fitting, so far it seems perfect with the material beeing finest imported linen. I am waiting now for the other 2 suits and some more shirts.

About tailors in Delhi. I would be happy to hear if anyone else has had experiences with Njorde Style in Hauz Khas Market, B-40, New Delhi. My husband was very interested in a linen suit, and we'll be visiting there begin May 2010. Thank you so much!
