Studying abroad at University of Delhi (DU) in January...need advice!!!
Hi folks,
I am a 21 year old undergrad student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. I will be traveling to Delhi in January and staying for approx. 6 months while attending university. I am extremely excited but still in the early stages of planning my trip, and my departure is a lot sooner than I realized!
Does any one know about the various different colleges that are within DU? I am really interested in finding one that is most conducive to someone who finds academics important but also appreciates a strong student community, and an environment where I can learn as much outside the classroom as in.
As for fairly long-term housing rental in Delhi, do people have any warnings about dealing with landlords, perhaps more specific than 'don't get scammed'? Do people have suggestions on what to look for in a small apartment in Delhi? Are there tell-tale signs of a bad property that are unique to Indian rentals?
Finally, does anyone know if there are significant ex-pat communities in New Delhi? In case one were to become a bit overwhelmed, are there go-to spots where one is most likely to run into fellow travelers, aside from the big tourist attractions?
Actually, one more thing: if you have any advice, seemingly relevant to my questions or not, about being an exchange student in Delhi, just fire away!
Thanks to all in advance!

I never messed with expats, other than a couple, one in Chennai & another in Gujarat, I feel no need. Its been a awhile but I can add try to to get nearby housing. I went from Greater Kailash (godforsaken blue bus & infernal rickshaw)! The metro should be factored into the mix..

Where in DU do they do experimental neurocognition ? Where can I get a good ROI on chole bhature ? I guess what he is asking is that if you measure the returns in terms of taste, hygiene, ambiance, service and accord suitable weightages a,b,c,d then for a given cost p, which Chola Bhatura joint gives you maximum of (a*taste+b*hygiene+c* ambiance +d*service)/p ?

ROI = Return On Investment which is a typical term in finance. He simply asked where he can get the best value for money Chole Bhature.

Delhi Exchanger, I am assuming you have already spent a couple of months in India by now, since you mentioned you would be coming in January.
So, talking of what you might not have figured out by now. If you are enrolled in DU, you might be staying near the campus- Kamla Nagar, Malviya Nagar or Vijay Nagar. Since these areas are populated by the student community, they are pretty safe, yes for expats too. Only thing you should be careful about is haggling. Learn a few Hindi phrases to drop in front of shopkeepers, smart alecks, and auto wallahs.
Hang out in Hauz Khas cafes, Paharganj markets, university libraries, eateries around north campus, and you are sure to bump into students and expats alike.
If there's anything specific you would like to ask, feel free.

If one does the differential of what Big Mac does to PPP; for Chole Bhature to QLI of different 'nabes in Delhi; then there is a dream of a chance to win Sveriges Riksbank Prize.
