Student in India for conference. Where to stay?

I am a student and will be in Delhi for a few days next week prior to going to a conference. I would like to find somewhere cheap and clean to stay. I usually go the backpacker route, but unfortunately, I'll be lugging a laptop and dress clothes around with me this time. I need somewhere with secure rooms or a safe to lock up my valuables.

I'd prefer somewhere centrally located in Delhi that I could pre-book online. Any recommendations? Any estimates on cab fare from the airport?

Hello Student in India!
I think one consideration should be which conference you plan to attend. If it is the IPMA World PM Congress at the Hotel Ashok 13-16 November, consider staying near one of the "official" hotels, because the Congress has regular transportation between them and the Ashok.

For example, the Hans Palace is an official hotel, but there are many cheaper hotels nearby (see the above link by John.sw) Good luck!

(we are also headed to India next week)

Thanks. Made a hotel reservation in Karol Bagh my first night. I'll probably check out a few budget places my first day.

youth hostel would be a great option. Non a/c rooms are available at Rs 300 ( you doint need the a/c these days) Its a stone's throw from the American Embassy and a nice secure area. Address: International Youth Hostel, 5-Nyaya Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi - 110021 Telephone: 91-11-26116285 E-Mail: hostelbooking@yhaindia.org Location: City centre in the Diplomatic Enclave Area
