Special made clothing, any recomondations?

Well I thought I'd use your knowledge on EVERYTHING here at IM and ask if anyone could tell me about a good tailor they had bought something from, in delhi? I need to buy a Salwar Kameez or some sort of indian clothing for when I start working and I would love to be able to have it custum made!

Also how long does it take to make a Salwar Kameez? Are any open on sundays? Do I pay in advance or demand I pay only when I collect?

If anyone has a good tailor in mind that speaks a little english maybe (or atleast enough to understand what I want ), works pretty fast and is safe I would really love to hear from you

Also I will need to shop indian style clothing in delhi, do you recomend any special shops?

Thanks a bunch

love

Guðbjörg

I cannot recommend a tailor, really, but I hope somebody can advice you on materials, prices etc. On my first day in Delhi, some friends had salwar kameez (and sarees) made in a shop of fabrics on a grubby lane off Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. We found out that they had paid too much (because they were foreigners and didn't know about materials and prices), and the quality of the fabrics (salwar kameez) was poor. They looked worn out after the first wear and wash. Still, I'm certain that there are lots of good shops and tailors, and if you know what you're doing, the results will be satisfactory.

I bought mine ready-made. I fell in love with Kannika, Connaught Place, but it was the first shop (specialised in salwar kameez) I found when I was in Delhi. I wanted a cotton salwar kameez, not a synthetic one, and Kannika stocked beautiful cotton and silk salwar kameez. I spent hours there.

A department store in the Ansal Plaza shopping centre stocked a dizzying array of salwar kameez, plus separate blouses, trousers, and dupattas.

Good luck!
You're "the IDEX girl" from Iceland, aren't you? I'd also love to volunteer, next year, who knows?

I think, that wud take 2 days at the most in any tailor shop.
I can take you to the tailors and you can decide on your choice. Shopping wont be a hassle but would be just bit expensive. Moreover tailor made clothes suits some persons better so its more of a choice after you wear the new Choices.
As far as Ansal Plaza goes its full of clothes and you cn make ur choices there.
Pretty much thats what I would say on it.
Not a Tough thing to look for once u in delhi. its just getting warmer and warmer so u wud prefer a lighter clothes. Even in delhi a pair of shorts and Tees wud do an ease for u.
Happy hunting.

shopping for a salwar kameez

There is a really nice shop called WESTSIDE in Karol Bagh shopping area. It's kind of like a department store. In the ladies section you can mix and match salwar kameez tops and bottoms. The stuff is made out of 100% cotton and is good quality. Also, the designs are kind of modern and plain ..not too fancy for everyday use. But they have a range of styles from everyday to fancy. You will probably get lucky there. They have nice changerooms and it is just like a western style shop. Also, it is FIXED PRICE and not expensive.

If you go to Chandni Chowk you can certainly find some nice stuff, but it is more for fancier occasions as they specialize in wedding sarees and you are never guaranteed of the quality or price unless you know what you're doing.

If you go to ANSAL PLAZA, which is also a great shopping centre (but kind of far - 30 mins by rickshaw from Connaught place), they have a nice cotton selection in SHOPPERS STOP (the department store there). I also have found some good quality and not expensive cotton stuff there. It is fixed price.

PAHARGANJ has some great cheap shops where you can buy cotton kurtas (the short indian style top that ends just below the hips) for like 100 rupees... they also have salwar kameez shops there too. Not expensive, but I never seem to like the styles.

Try Karol Bagh first...there's tons of shops there around Westside.

I do have a tailor also in Delhi, but he speaks no english and I couldn't even try to explain how to get there! If you really have a desire to design your own clothing then just make sure you go to a good fabric shop and get 100% cotton fabric. Soak it yourself to shrink it first. At the fabric shop they can probably recommend a tailor in the area that works with them...draw out a design very specifically, and they'll do it no problem. for a salwar kameez, it shouldn't be more than 150-200 rupees for the whole thing. I think you could even get it for a bit less depending where you are.

Good luck and have fun!
