Single woman moving to New Delhi
Hello everyone, I'm about to move to New Delhi for work and had a few questions. When living in Taiwan, I had some severe bronchial allergies and have heard that New Delhi air can trigger these as well, I was wondering what you can tell me about getting good medical treatment/air purifiers is like in New Delhi? Also, I would like to be able to keep fit, and was wondering if there are any gyms or something like that would be available to women (alternatively, I'm big on hiking). I know when I visited Pakistan there were no such things but that India is generally less restrictive. I appreciate all your help!

Hi and welcome
It will depend on of what you are allergic to. Many people are allergic to pollens so April is a very bad month for them. After April, things are not so bad. If it is dust then it will be a yearlong problem. First get an allergy check if you have not done it yet. About medical treatment and gyms etc, don’t worry, you have hundreds of good option.

Sometimes, the joy that the Daybreak brings, is unparalleled!
That's the thing, they didn't tell me what I was allergic to. Though I think it was the factories, I worked in a very industrial area of Taiwan.
Gyms get fairly regularly discussed here, so you could try a search for them.
I guess the Moving to Delhi forum here (for instance) might also have some general tips for you. Good luck with the move

I hope that you won't face any problems here but if unfortunately you do face some serious bronchial allergies then get a test done. Check http://www.vpci.org.in/ .
If industrial pollution is the cause of your allergies you have little to worry. Delhi is not an industrial city and it is the only city in the world where all public transport and many private transport runs on green CNG fuel.
During summer especially dust is a real issue.
As far as medical facility is concerned you can expect things to be as good as anywhere else. There are good gyms equipped with world class equipments in all well to do localities. Biking is some thing you can persue in some select localities.

I beg to disagree about the air quality. From november-end of january you can expect regular episodes of smog that hang over the city. This is due to a lack of air circulation above Delhi and also to the fact that a lot of people light all kinds of fires to stay warm on the streets, generating lots of smoke. From february on it's better but don't expect Switzerland and pure Alpine air in Delhi. Air pollution really is a problem, despite all the CNG buses and auto's.
You can buy air purifiers, I invested about 250 EUR in a decent one and during the winter months it really makes a difference.
As for gyms, you have them in all kinds and price-ranges here, from 200 rupees/month outfits where you'll undoubtably be the only woman, to posh hotel gyms charging 2 lakhs/year. My wife and I go to Fitness First, they're based in Gurgaon and at Connaught place, N-block. Costs about 3000 rupees/month and you have all the modern equipment and -according to my wife- not too many ogling males.

Oh to be a woman not working in the poor NGO sector. Thanks for the info, though. I'll see what I can do

Biking is fine but in certain areas only, l would not risk it in rush hour, the driving standards are totally different! If you can afford it, stick to South Delhi, like say GK 2.
