Silver & Gold Jewellery in Delhi?

Hi there India Mikers

I'm writing this on behalf of my brother,
who's on his last couple of days would like to buy some silver/gold jewellery for his special lady friend
He already got scammed ind Delhi upon his entry to India, so i'm tryin' to save him the extra trouble, you know...
Any advices on official govrmntal/supervised places for safely shopping jewellery in Delhi?

Also, while i'm at it, he'll be looking for some fabrics and all kind of knick-knacks, and i offered him DilliHaat as an option. Any other recommendations?

Thanks alot!

Elad

Smile

Tashiq is on the expensive side but considered the most reliable for gold.
Silverline in Khan market is good for silver.
As to the rest, Cottage industries emporium on Janpath, Janpath in general, The state emporiums & art faretrade galleries on Baba S.k. Marge across from Janpath, Pahar Ganj, Sarojini Nagar and many more -- Delhi really does have the best shopping in the world as far as I'm concerned.
Shanti Mohala is THE fabric market.
Happy shopping!!

Thanks for the info!
Tashiq does seem on the expensive side, but Batya gave me some good leads here, khan market sounds like a good place to start.
Thanks again

If he wants options and variety with reputed jewellers he should head to Gold Souk in Gurgaon. Take a metro to the end - Huda City, and a rickshaw or auto to Gold Souk.

Elad,
Khan market is a pleasant place to shop but it's upscale and not at all on the cheep end.
Karol Bagh is another great market, middle class, with a gold lane but even in a relatively reputable store, one might end up paying for gold but receiving something else. Tashiq is supposedly the most trust worthy.
Sarojini Nagar (closed on Mondays) Is a favorite of mine. it's heaven for brand name seconds and rejects - what we call Odfai Yetzur. Gap, H&M, Golf, Mango and many more all at throw away prices. Labels are often removed. You have to bargain hard there. Janpath market & the formal cottage industries emporium (large building towards the bottom) are also really worth a visit.
Happy happy!

Its not Tashiq. Its Tanishq.

There are plenty of reputed jewelers in Delhi. But if you are a newcomer who has already been scammed then head to Tanishq(no I dont work for them )

Tanishq is marginally expensive than most nonbranded jewellery. The assumption that they are expensive comes from the fact that they donot sell very light/cheap pieces. A similar piece of jewellery would be similarly priced in Tanishq and in any other reputed jewellery shop.

Santushti Shopping Complex - there are a couple of options there. Racecourse Road (?) Chanakyapuri, (near Hotel Ashok), New Delhi. It won't be cheap. He can also get fabrics there.

M Block in Greater Kailish 1 has a mix of modern and traditional Indian clothes, jewellery and accessories.

Central Cottage Industries Emporium on Janpath near Connaught Place has plenty of handicrafts and 'souvenier' type items.

Returned from Delhi again without a single piece...
Gold prices are up, 22 K is expensive, 14 & 18 K are almost non existent in reputable shops and what I saw was all heavy gold as apposed to the partly hollow gold we get in the west.
Tashinq had a beautiful variety but the earrings being full gold were too heavy for me (and I mean heavy...)and regarding other pieces, I couldn't bring myself to spend so much for something so shiny (22 k is) that in the west would appear fake...
If anyone knows of a reputable place in Delhi that sells 14K, I'd appreciate this info for the future.

No one buys anything less that 22K. Given that in a week will begin the festival season, ending in Diwali, the spot market prices for gold will be higher than other parts of the country. The word you are looking for is "rolled gold" not exactly 14/18K.

Since you list Jerusalem as your home base, have you tried there ? I know it has diamond centers, whether it has gold jewelery centers, I did not look

PS: Did you stroll the small lanes of Chandni Chowk and look at traditional jewelers ?

Indians prefer 22K as gold ornaments are considered a financial asset as well as beautiful piece of jewellery.
14K and 18K wont have resell value in India so almost no one buys/sells it.

Can some one tell me what is Rolled Gold or whatever artificial jewellery is called in India made of. I know that it has a very thin layer of gold on it to look like it, but what is the base metal? I am of course talking of the one that is made to look like real gold jewellery.

Thank you.
I didn't make it to Chandni Chowk. I was limited time wise and was concerned I might end up paying for gold but getting something else...
Israel has 14k & 18K jewelry much like Italy, 14 k being more popular, no 22k as far as I know but the designs are boring in comparison to India and we pay a lot for the craft so that 14K here ends up costing a very similar rate per gram as 22k in India. 18 costs more here than 22 in India. But, since everything here is made much lighter (hollow most of the time) & smaller, a piece of jewelry will cost less here.
Can you recommend a reputable shop in Chandni Chowk for next time?
Thanks.
