Short trip to Delhi area.
Short trip to Delhi area.
Next March my wife and I want to go to Delhi but only for a week.
Her main need is to see the Taj mahal.
I don't know if any of you guys can help and come up with some sort of an itinerary for us. We are not flushed with money either but don't want the complete bottom end of everything.
I have heard a day trip with the train is OK to do from Delhi to Agra. We don't want to be doing too much -- just enough to keep us both out of trouble. I am sixty and my wife late fifties.
Any suggestions other than stay at home!
cheers, Pete
Forgot to mention it will be our anniversary treat.

You could complete the golden triangle with a visit to Jaipur, or possibly fit in a trip to Gwalior. After the Taj will the rest of your week be more ighseeing, Shopping, or R&R oriented?
We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. ~

Nah man just stay at home.............
So five days, a "not too much money" budget, you came to the right place!
First up I'll point you to another thread that has some ideas on things in and around Delhi, from memory none of the destinations mentioned are more than 13 hours away (the 13 hours is the exception and includes an overnight train) many a great deal closer!
Here is the link
Weekend ideas
As to costs, well a decent room will cost you anywhere between 400Rps and 950Rps depending on where you are (there are budget options but I'm guessing you want a modicum of comfort)
This range will almost always get you, Hot water, Cable TV, room service (India stylee) clean sheets/towels daily.
It's not plush but it's comfortable and usually near a transport hub!
Travel wise your GBP will go a long way here's a sample of Indian train costs from Delhi to Jaipur a distance of 307 Kilometers.
So even in the top class your travelling for 3 Rupees a kilometer!
Though charges vary on the different classes of train this is a fair view of the costs incurred, travelling by rail, certain trains will cost a lot more, some will cost less!!!
1st AC 1045 Rupees
2 Tier Ac 610 Rupees
3 Tier Ac 441 Rupees
Sleeper 177 Rupees
Food wise it's up to you but
putting aside 600 rupees a day to eat (per couple), you would probably, have money left over on your food budget, again there's the really cheap option of spending about 120 a day for food (for a couple) but at your age I'm thinking that is not an option (slap me if I'm wrong)
This is India of course and there may well be places where you spend 20 quid on a meal and say AAAhhh.
