Short and sweet in Delhi -can you DIY?

Rightio,
I know I know, 3 days is too short, May is the wrong season but that's just the way the cookie has crumbled (that or making the Paris trip even shorter than 4 days!..anyone think that may be a good idea anyway?? 3 days Paris 4 days Delhi?)

BUT I thought I could do it. DTTDC has a 3 day tour of the so dubbed Golden Triangle, - but is there anyway of booking before arrival?

Or, could the tour be better with a tour operator ? (yes, I have emailed Namaste just now!) safe, hassle free. but other tours have quoted me around $300 US - are there cheaper ways?

Browsing through my LP Delhi makes me think that perhaps I could do it myself - getting on trains, navigating through sites, booking the hotels and it would be much cheaper! Would all this be rapid with unexpected obstacles ie can't find the platform where the train departs, can't find which direction to head for sights? Would I be safe? Would I get confused and wish I just got a tour? Yes, I am travelling by myself - in some way, I think perhaps I just need a buddy to point me in the right directions along the way.....whada you guys think?

cheers!

Considering the month in which you are planning to visit India, I think you should spend 7 days in Paris and avoid Delhi on this trip altogether.
Pardon my bluntness, but attempting the "Golden Triangle" in May is nothing short of madness !

Aside the temperature-- I would spend more time in Delhi than in Paris. IMHO Paris is better in pictures than in real life, and I've been there 5-6 times. Every time with high expectations, and every time I end up renting a car to get away from the city.

But then again, I haven't been to Delhi yet....

What are your travel plans aside from Paris and Delhi, maybe I can give you some alternatives?

If you're coming from the States, the jetlag you get going to Europe can take a couple of days to shake. @ days if you're an excited tourist, a week if you live here and have to go back towork. Paris is great in May, and is a wonderful city in my humble opinion. I am there a few times a year.

With a little prep and advanced study, you could do Delhi on your own. Pre-book your accomodation, so you have an Air Conditioned base. Then look at a map of the attractions you want to see, plan a route, and each day hire a taxi/scooter rickshaw to take you to them. Be prepared though; Delhi with 45+/105+ degrees is brutal.

thanks guys! I think I will
a) brave the heat - it'll be a shocker since I haven't seen a summer for years
b) brave it on my own - with a little help from my friends at Nemaste and Lily at JaiVilla! I will not miss train, planes or elephants!
c) and endeavor to see the golden triangle in 3 DAYS. so paris gets a good looker too.

And the other places I'm going? HOME to Australia!! very excited and, yep, heading to another winter . BUT I'm going to spend portions of my summer break in China..

I am however, hoping to spend next summer in Hellsinki - so may watch out Scadinavian countries!

Cheers and wish me luck!

Great attitude, and truly itchy feet!!

do you have a programme for Paris? my suggestions (things not to be missed):

- Hotel de Ville - IMHO, the most beautiful building in the city
- gyros (Greek sandwich) in Quartier Latin, just before or after the Notre Dame visit
- Buddha Bar, 8 rue Boissy d'Anglais, near Madelene

Keep us posted!! you may be a pioneer in the three days GT trips in May :-))
