salwar kameez shopping
Hello,
I will soon be heading to India. It'll be my first time visiting. I don't have a lot in terms of clothing that I think will be appropriate for the weather (I'm a female and I'll be in Delhi, Agra, and Rajasthan from mid-march til early april). Rather than buying things before leaving I was thinking of trying to buy some stuff once I get to India. I have 2 questions. 1. What is a reasonable price range for a salwar kameez that isn't terribly fancy (no gold, mirrors, etc.)? I imagine there's quite a range... but I have absolutely no idea what to expect and am not accustomed to shopping anywhere without set prices, so I'm a bit worried about it. 2. How much more expensive would it be to buy one at an set-price emporium? I'd like to get some clothes on my first day in the country and was considering making a stop at the emporium to pick up a thing or two on the first day when I'm fresh off the plane and overwhelmed...and then as I travel more and get a better feel for prices and bargaining graduate to the bazaars... but if the emporiums are significantly more expensive I may rethink that. Thanks for the advice! |

I was also going to recommend Fab India. You can buy kurtis and wear them with your regular pants or jeans for anywhere between $6 (cotton)-$20 (silk) a piece. The web site will list their locations.

Come to think of it you should also try Dilli Haat when you get to Delhi for nice kurtis at nice prices.

Thanks for the tips!
So at FabIndia stores are the prices fixed? Is there a way to know if a place is one where it's ok to try to bargain vs. not? I'm guessing if it's a street stall/market/bazaar then of course I'd bargain for it but when it's inside a store... ? |

Bargaining is an art. You will learn it gradually. Janpath , Karolbag - Ajmal Khan Market , Palika Bazaar , Pahargange Market (all in Delhi ) are good/ideal place to start with.

Fab India is wonderful, but I don't think you canbargain there.
It's a bit expensive, compared to other India shops, but the stuff is really great quality. ciao vale |
